Good Morning
I have an under-hood solenoid that is activated with the key switch, it connects
the coach battery to a separate fuse panel that I have many accessories tied to
such as the leveling system, aux brake vac booster pump, elect mirrors, and a
few other accessories that I don't want "LIVE" after I turn the coach off.
Seems I need to replace this thing every year. I've searched and purchased the
largest amperage and most heavy continual duty ones I can find and they all die
within a year.
The current one failed during our trip back from Minnesota's north shore on
Sunday. I found myself on the hills of Duluth, MN with very poor brakes because
the booster pump quit due to the solenoid failure. I immediately knew what the
problem was, stopped and moved one wire to bypass the solenoid for the trip home
and all was well, but there must be a continuous duty solenoid on the market
that is heavy duty enough for this application.
Any recommendations ??
Thanks
Ray

Ray,
Are you overloading the Solenoid? You might try installing two and splitting
the load.
At least this way if one goes out you can fall back on the other. I have no
suggestions
for a particular continues run one as I have the same problem with one I
use to run my
York air compressor. They just don't hold up to heavy loads and the
continues run
ones are not cheap. You might check for a life time warranted one.

Ray,
You might try putting a diode across the contacts. Chances are the
inductive loads are causing the contacts to arc upon opening. The preferred
method is to put the diodes at the loads, but that may be too much trouble.
This company carries a wide assortment of relays: www.waytekwire.com

Thanks Charles, I'm not sure why they fail. The current one is rated for
continuous duty and has a 100 amp capacity. I don't think the air pumps and the
vacuum booster pump draw 100 amps, I'll check.
Not a bad idea to split the items up, I'll look into that.
Thanks.

What is wrong with using as couple of 30 or 40 amp automotive relays. I assume you are burning out the coils on the solenoids you are using. You can get relays by the hand full at any junk yard. Also the diodes are available in the same fuse box where you find the relays. People in the junk yards always take the fuses but usually leave the relays and diodes.
Automotive relays are also available new at AutoZone.

Ray: From those solenoids that I have taken apart, it seems that most are build down to price rather than up to quality. They work by bridging two contacts with a round washer that is forced in place by the solenoid itself. The best ones are all copper inside, but many have only a plated steel washer to make contact. The ones you get at the RV stores are especially bad, rated as continuous or not.
I am with the others, try a Bosh stile relay or two in parallel. The best of them seem to hold up quite well (the knock off's don't though).
In this price competitive world, it becomes a challenge to find good things at times. If you find one of the Bosh stile relays from the fusebox of a junk car you will probably get a good quality one vs. the chance you take with a "new" one.

Ray;
In order to find out if the solenoid is continuous duty, put a meter on the coil and if it is 3-5 ohms, it is NOT a continuous duty. The continuous duty coil will be 15-25 ohms. A lot of brands will list them as CD, but they are not. Cole-Hersee has a #24059 and it is available at http://www.ryderfleetproducts.com Just type in the number and it will come up. They also have a #24143 that has silver contacts, and the electronic one is #48785.
Ryder Fleet products has other items of interest for the GMCMH, take a look at their catalog.
Have used a lot of various relays/contacts in the grain drying set-up, even some of the latching type used there also. JD uses a lot of relay/solenoids in the cabs of the tractors and combines, and that is what I am using now.

I just checked a continuous duty solenoid I got at Napa - Echlin 1003. Its coil resistance is 16.5 ohms....Wow! that's 3/4 amp current draw. I need to rethink my plan to have it on whenever the engine is running.

PS a long GMC pulled into the campground this aft. I'll check it out tomorrow.
