The only time I ran my previous generator was to cool the coach while driving. My Onan is gone and I don't want to spend money on a replacement for the whole coach. I'm thinking that I could get a smaller portable generator that would fit inside the old compartment and wire it just to run the roof AC. Can this be done? And, what power generator whould I need?(Brand Model?)

I replaced my troll with an Onan 2.8kw Microlite RV generator that I found with only 20 hrs on it, for 500 bucks. Half the size and totally quiet. I also ditched the old two rooftop a/c units and put in a single low profile Carrier 15k btu. Takes a bit longer to get the coach cool but it does the job.
I wouldn't recommend putting in any off the shelf home depot generator into the compartment, it needs to be one designed for containment, vented properly, etc.
I have seen some people mount a regular generator on a utility platform that plugs into a rear hitch. Whatever works for ya.
