Wouldcha know it. I go to show someone how sweet my Onan is and the
darn thing wont even fire. Cranks good though. I went through
Duane's TS guide and followed all the right steps and still no joy.
Called Duane, not home. I was positive that since it cranked, and
had good fuel, that it had to be the coil. Sure enough, pulled a
plug, cranked it, nada. Where did I put that coil 6 years
ago.............found it after about 2 hrs of looking. Installed it,
same problem except this time I noticed that when I let off the start
button, the plug I had laying across the head would fire a couple
times. Watched it and happened again. Whisky Tango Foxtrot as we
used to say in the Navy. Called Duane back and hurray, he was home.
He listened to my TS results and told me it was the ignition. His
reasoning was that when I let off the start button, the system would
ground and the saturated coil would then fire the plugs.
Hmmmm, took his advice, static tuned it, near burned my chest hair
off (both of 'em) and figured I was on the right track. Adjusted the
Pertronix just a few thousandths and bingo. The darn thing starts and
runs as sweet as ever. Wow, those Pertronix units are touchy and wow
is Duane still "Mr Onan".

Steve,

When you say " Adjusted the Pertronix just a few thousandths...", are you
referring to Lawrence Gaskins' flywheel triggered Pertronix setup or the
Onan-marketed direct replacement for the original points?

The direct replacement one. That puppy is very sensative and I just
don't see how it could possibly get out of adjustment. This is the
second time in 5 years. Must be heat related. It did backfire once
the last time I shut it down but I could never understand how that
would do the misdeed.
Anyway,it's about as perfect as it ever was. Hit the AC and it barely
misses a note.

Duane is the man and solid state is the way to go. My old Onan fires and runs the air every time. I think it may run another 40 years no more than we use the thing. Glad you got it going.

I'm glad to hear it's not the Gaskins mod. If you continue to have trouble,
maybe you could remove the Pertronix module from the Onan box and mount it
adjacent to the flywheel w/magnet. You'd get much steadier timing.

Ken,
This is just the second time in a lot of years. My Onan has been
soooo good to us over the years. Once in a while I need something
like this to keep me in my place.

My Onan has also run reliably for years, but on my last trip, it suddenly started puking oil in a sizeable amount. It has always been dry. It's not the oil pressure switch and not around the filter nor the oil pan. It appears to be coming from an area that could be the rear seal, but I'd be surprised that would happen within a day. IIRC I had to tighten the governor housing bolts years ago. Any other suggestions? I sure hate to yank it out.

So Ken,
Are you implying that the Gaskins mod is the way to go or is there a better way?
I'm still on points and will be looking for the best mod for electronic ignition.

You're sure the oil filter adapter gasket is intact and the
adapter mounting bolts are tightened to spec?

Mine had a leak just like you describe, and with willing
suspension of disbelief I put a small socket on those two
little bolts - just to see. Sure enough, each of them was
probably a turn and a half loose. I pulled the filter and
adapter off completely, cleaned everything up, made sure the
gasket was not torn or cracked. Put it all back together,
tightened to spec, no leak since.

As you know, oil leaks are a lot like water leaks. It might
come out of the light fixture in the kitchen, but the hole
in the roof is around the chimney flashing in the family room.

But you said it's not around the filter. So that's probably
not it. Might be worth checking, though. Sure a lot easier
than yanking the whole thing just to find out that it really
was.

For the last year or so I was sure that I had an oil leak behind my
flywheel based on the amount of oil dripping down the front when it
was running.

I finally decided to pull the front cover. I grabbed the oil filter to
remove it and it didn't seem very tight. So I turned it about a whole
turn and restarted the Onan. The leak had stopped!

Something so simple and it had never occurred to me

Toby and Emery--thanks for the replies. I took off the rear cylinder head shroud (the one with the oil filter hole) and ran it for a while. Although the filter was indeed loose, that made no difference. Also it wasn't coming from the adapter--it is further towards the front of the M/H and I can see oil running down from about the centerline of the crank and down the back lip of the oil pan. I'm not optimistic that this will be a quick fix! When it cools down a bit here I may take off some more shrouds and get a closer look at the governor housing. After that I'm suspecting it will have to come out. Although it runs and generates well, I'm almost thinking that if it comes out, it won't go back in.

That's what my question back to Steve was about: Onan sells a solid state
ignition module for later model generators than ours. It's made by
Pertronix and can be easily adapted to our 4kW or 6kW generators. More
commonly known as the Onan solid state ignition. It is still operated by
the vertical plunger from the camshaft and yields erratic timing even though
it performs better than the original points.

Some years ago Lawrence Gaskins, a former GMC owner who abandoned us for a
french fry oil powered SOB, devised a way to use 'most any Pertronix module
in a unique way: triggered by a magnet embedded in the Onan's flywheel.
That mod costs about 1/2 what the Onan version does, and completely
eliminates erratic timing, yielding much smoother engine operation. That's
the subject of the photo album I posted:

The best mod ever for an onan is the crank/flywheel triggered pertronix. Anything involving use of the original points plunger is bound to have problems at some point. My onan refused to run correctly before I did the crank trigger mod, now it runs like a swiss watch. Voltage variances of less then .5v! Smile

I replaced the front seal a few years ago. IIRC, it is not much of a
job and that's where a lot of oil can come from. Never replaced a
rear seal.
I did the front seal in place. I also made my own oil filter adapter
gasket when the store bought one failed almost immediately after
installation. That too wasn't much of a job.

Thanks Steve--i think I'll pull the flywheel and have a look. It's quite possible that could be it and just running towards the rear on the way down. It's just hot enough outside that I'm not in the mood to pull the whole unit, but if I get up early enough on the weekend I could pull the front off. Even if I yank it, my garage is so hot I might as well throw it in the pool and try it there:)
