Darcy Moses' compressor [message #93274] |

On the last trip out, my compressor motor turned toes up. My compressor was put in by a PO. It is my understanding, from talking with local club members, that Darcy Moses built AND installed the unit on what is currently my coach. My questions: has anyone who has one of these units on their coach had a similar problem? If so, did you find a suitable replacement motor? Did it fit in the space allotted with minimal modifications?
Thanks.

What failed? The motor or the compressor itself?
I've been wanting to do a york system like Darcy did but the motor is hard to come by, not to mention it's a ways down the priority list.
If it's the compressor, yorks are around.
Don't toss the system if you decide not to use it. If nothing else there are parts I'd want.

The starter motor Darcy used was from the small 4cyl GM cars. He had to make a new end plate to hold the bearing on the drive end. The armature shaft was modified to accept the pulley. Sounds like the golf cart starter/generator would make an excellent replacement.

What happened was the solenoid froze which caused the motor to run continuously. It either popped the safety valve, a fitting or a hose and ran till the motor burned up. The compressor itself is in great shape and is staying right where it is. Dead flat empty to full up in less than 90 seconds is hard to beat.

On the york compressor units Bill Bramlet makes he uses
starter generators like the ones used in golf carts.

I will definitely look into this one and let you know how it pans out.

So, which golf cart starter did you use??
Some only draw 15 amps which seems low for a compressor of that size
