Is there any reason why my rooftop AC should take about 5 minutes to start? Once she's running everything is good, but it's a nail-biter for a while.

Larry,
We may need a little more info.
Do you mean that the fan is running but there is a five minute delay before the compressor kicks on and starts cooling? The original AC's had, I believe, a 90 second start delay. Some owners have mentioned disabling the delay. I do not know if it is adjustable.
Maybe it just seems like five minutes when it is hot.

Sent while holding my breath.

My 1977 vintage unit takes a few min before it turns on. Seems like 3-5 min. My 1994 vintage unit comes on right away. both suck. I am replacing them with something completely different...

I'll have to time it. Basically I turn the switch and nothing happens for an eternity! I had thought about the delay circuit, but couldn't think of a scenario where it would fail like that. It seems to me that it either works, or it doesn't. With the recent work to the Onan I thought that might be the problem (I've just replaced the bridge rectifier.) But plugging in to A/C still brings slow AC.

The first time this happened I checked the breakers, put a volt meter in an outlet, but everything seemed fine, then she turned on.

There is a built in delay at the factory 3-4min for the generator to stabilize prior to the compressor starting.

On my 78 Birchaven it averages about 3.5 minutes.

Hope it helps.

There is a compressor start delay timer in the circuit. If you take off the
fibreglass outer cover, you will see a metal electrical cover on the drivers
side of the unit held on by a single screw. Make sure the unit is not
energized. Spray the relay contacts with contact cleaner and follow up with
clean compressed air. Not too much pressure, this stuff is old and somewhat
delicate. When you are very sure the cleaner has all evaporated, start the
unit and watch the relay. If you are on a ladder, be careful and don't be
suprised when the compressor cycles on, lose your balance and fall. It makes
a lot more noise on top of the coach than it does when you are inside it.
There is a way to bypass the relay so the compressor starts when you switch
the unit on, but it puts a larger ampere load on the circuit than starting
the fan and then the compressor. Seems like a long time when you are waiting
to cool off though. It is the way the unit was intended to operate.

My roof air (Coleman Mach 1)can be turned on fully starting as soon as my 4000 Onan emerald generator is running.

I wasn't aware of any delay system ever being used (unless Explorer decided to remove it)

Coleman AC's don't have that feature. Only some models of DuoTherm.
