I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but it seems to me that as the air
is blowing through the front grill, we're trying to cool 1) the external
trans cooler 2) the evaporator for the air conditioner and 3) the water
itself that has already been warmed by the first two and the radiator that
has been pre-heated by the engine which also has an Oil cooler and a
Transmission cooler built in.....now it seems to me that that's a whole lot
of work for the rad to do....

So to take some of the strain off of the radiator has anyone figured out
where to put some of these 'coolers' other than in front of the
radiator....maybe combined with an electric fan???

Just askin' !

Thanks

Mine is mounted on the lower radiator guard below the bumper. No AC Condenser down there.

my coach came with them mounted already in the lower drivers side corner from the PO. I would consider deleating the radiator mounted nits and going with all external coolers, the only thing is for those who drive in cold climates the radiator based coolers sometimes also serve as heaters to moderate oil temp. remember oil too cold is also not good like oil too hot...

Lower drivers corner..Hmmm, I'll see what's in there....I'm a little too
conservative....small "C"...in my thinking to eliminate the plumbed in Rad
coolers...<VBG>

Mike, it is hot here also.
I have not got mine mounted yet. I installed new lines last year and unhooked the PO cooler on pass side of grille. I am going to mount the Mazda RX 7 cooler to the gaurd then drive the coach to my local guy to have hoses made to adapt to my new cooling lines. I am just waiting for cooler temps.

I do not have a picture but here is a picture of Blaine's lower radiator guard installed on a GMC.

http://www.bdub.net/blainemerrell/index.html

Just picture a trans cooler mounted on the inside of the guard. Blane makes them with room to bottom mount a vertical cooler or in my case I have mine just mounted on stand-offs to the angled surface of the cooler. You can get those stand-offs for mounting coolers at most auto parts stores for a few of dollars. They are just round plastic discs about the size of a quarter, or should I say "looney", and they have something like a cable tie going through the center of them to tighten them down.

Here is a set that is square instead of round.

I believe you are correct. It is a wonder any air is left for the engine. No wonder the fan clutch has to come one... it needs to pull air though a maze.

I just installed an engine oil cooler. It is to the right of the air conditioning dryer, basically in front of the grill in front of the batteries. I am a little ashamed of the bracket I made, but it is sort of an experiment. The oil goes through this cooler and then into the radiator. I did it that way to 1) give the radiator a small break and 2) to keep the engine oil from getting to cool in cool weather. We are heading Oregon way, and I figure it will probably be 950 degrees in Redding, CA. The climb up to Grant's pass, Oregon will test the theory.

Its 103 in Redding right now
and not much cooler down here in Chico.

Take extra water for both you and the coach.

Its my trans temps I worry about; they always
seem to climb when I hit a hill.

You are absolutely correct in you assumption. no mattter where you put the coolers in front of the radiator, it becomes part of the overall system. Those who position them in upper or lower parts of the airstream and think they are avoiding a major disruption as part of the cooling system are kidding themselves. Given all that, a well functioning GMC radiator can handle a transmission cooler and a power steering cooler as well as an AC condenser all in front of a well functioning stock radiator.

Few month ago, one of my mechanics mounted the aux. trans cooler behind the
rock shield which is mounted at an angle. I went up to him and told him to
take it off and relocate it the way we always do.
You will not see the factory mount the coolers that way as the air tends to
go around the path of least resistance and when the fan clutch kicks on the
cooler is too far to befit.
I did not learn this in my Aeronautical courses, but learned to take data
and found out. Yes the air will try to go around the aux cooler even if it
is mounted 1/2 " from the radiator, but considerably less.

If you are eager to spend some dollars, here is one for you:

Mount it on either side of the radiator.

Do not take trans temp off the line. Just from the pan.
You want the trans to pull in the fluid that is normal.
When you monitor the line temp, it will go up as you add load.

Derale oil coolers have been around for many years.
I would imagine that tranny fluid cooler would also
be a winner. Derale coolers were very popular for
motorcycles in the past.

Lockheart was another popular brand of cooler.

Netters

Thanks

If you are eager to spend some dollars, here is one for you:
http://www.etrailer.com/product.aspx?pc=D13900

Mount it on either side of the radiator.
