I bought my coach with a bill-of-sale (so to speak). There is a place in Maine that will register and send plates to you. <http://www.getnewtitle.com/>
You still must have a sheriff verify the vin, and you have to fill in some paperwork and pay the price, but it worked for me.

If the bill of sale says it's a 1975, or earlier, and there is no conflicting evidence on the coach, then you can register it as a '75 or older coach. If it happens to become registered in California (and has never been registered there before) you will duck under the smog-check laws.

Don't ask...

Note that it says "WA bill of sale" which means no title. That can be an indication of problems, and makes it more difficult to get registered or a new title.

When I was a Deputy Sheriff I used to verify quite a few VINs so I
know CA does it and often. Not one time was my signature or badge
number ever verified.

Yup, they verified the VIN, but did not seem to care what any of the digits meant.

[GMCnet] VIN Hijinks (was: Re: 1978 Rear Twin Royale at COPART) [message #92297 is a reply to message #92282] Sat, 17 July 2010 16:36 Go to previous messageGo to next message

I have a weird issue with my registration that I plan to get resolved soon.

Somehow in my coach's life the title got created with the 5-digit serial
number from the ID plate on the outside of the body, the one under the
driver window and another by the door.. That isn't the VIN of the
vehicle, which can only be viewed from the glovebox or under the hood
(and apparently two other places according to David Greenberg.)

So, the number on my title is on my coach, but it's not the actual VIN.
Probably not the biggest deal, but I'll eventually have to get this made
right.

My Birchaven is registered under the Coachmen-assigned number rather than
the VIN. And apparently always has been. I suspect other Coachmen-fitted
coaches are also. I thought of getting it changed, but the process proved
too much trouble at the time. Now, I've removed the Coachmen label from its
location on the driver's side panel. I guess I'll glue it back in that area
if the question ever arises. But, IIRC, that number is also stamped
somewhere on the frame (top right of the rear crossmember?).

I would suggest getting started on getting it corrected right away,
because it
will take a while to get it done. Better to start now than when you
"have to get it done".
