I just heard from a fellow GMCer that there is a plate on the bottom of the bell housing where the ring gear on the flywheel is accessible.
Too hot for me to get under the machine right now and I wonder if anyone can verify that point or might even have a photo of this item?
I would like to use a flywheel turning tool to try to get the engine to rotate before removing the starter to access the ring gear.
Many thanks.

There's a round access hole on the lower side of the bell housing just above the starter on the passenger side. It has a big plug that snaps into it. About the only pic i can find is the exploded view of the transmission if you have a parts manual.

Ralf,
Is there some reason you can't rotate the engine by the
damper pulley bolt? I have a couple transmissions out
in the building if you still need a picture let me know
and I will go take some.

Ralph, the starter has to be removed before you can remove the bottom converter dust shield. It's made in two pieces with a rivet that allows it to scissor into place. It does not have to be installed for operation. But, installation is advisable to keep road debris from being ingested into the bellhousing.
You can't get to the flywheel for rotation any other way. The plug on the side only allows you to observe the torque converter.

If anyone thinks they can rotate the engine by going through the round
inspection hole better try it.
