Some of us are considering going to Niagara Falls on the way to
Du Quoin IN. Plotting a route from the falls to Du Quoin and going
through Elkhart IN. my program gives me two options. One we can
go across , above lake Erie through Canada or two we can stay
in the states and run the southern shore line of lake Erie. Has anyone
traveled both routes and which do you recommend?

Why not do one each way? They're both fun to see, though I've heard that the wait to get across the border can be long at the Detroit/Windsor crossing.

We make that trip at least twice a year. My wife is from the Buffalo area and we live in Indiana near Chicago. My wife is headed that way by herself in a couple of weeks.
I prefer the Canadian route, she prefers the south side of Lake Erie route through Cleveland.
If you are carrying revolvers and / or automatic pistols, then stay in the US.
If you are carrying long guns and do not want to declare them with the Canadians and pay a $25.00 CDN fee, then stay in the US.
If you like driving Interstates routed over toll roads with big tolls then stay in the US.
If you like a shorter and a more leisurely drive, then go the Canadian route. In the winter time the Canadian route has much less snow and bad weather.
If I am in Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. I usually drive south along the river to Fort Erie and pick up Route 3 westbound. I run it across my Ontario route most of the way west and eventually pick up 401 in the western 1/3 to 1/4 of the my Ontario route.
If you are in a bigger rush, then take QEW northwest out of Niagara Falls to Hamilton and 403 west to Detroit. Or take 403 west to 402 and cross the border at Sarnia / Port Huron. On the US side at Sarnia / Port Huron you will end up at the start of I-69. There is much less traffic this way than going through Detroit.
I highly recommend the Canadian route.
On the US side consider taking I-69 from Michigan through Indianapolis to I-70 and meet I-57 in Effingham, Illinois. There are no tolls and it is a longer route through Indiana with higher speed limits than Illinois.
Microsoft will route you through my neighborhood on the south side of Lake Michigan on I-80. If you come that way feel free to stay at my hanger in Valparaiso, IN for the night. It is quiet and peaceful there with free WiFi. I'll try to remember to turn off the security on the WiFi before I leave for DuQuoin. There are restaurants and a 24 hour Wally World 1 mile away. I also have power and non-potable water available for you there.
Also if you come the South Chicago route on I-80 to I-57, watch out for my cousin. He is an Illinois State Trooper near Champaign, IL. They love to catch college students and out-of-staters on I-57 around Champaign. RVs follow truck speed limits in Illinois. Usually it is 55 but in a few places they raised it to 60 this year.

We went into Canada. We came up through Detroit. Getting in to Canada was interesting. Do you have any guns? No. Any rifles? No. Any hand guns? No. Any ammunition? No. Do you have any knives? No. How do you defend your selves? Is Canada that dangerous? Do I need weapons? He finally let us through.
Coming back in to the US. Handed over our passports. "Do you have anything to declare?" No. Thanks. Have a nice day.
I wondered about this after 911 and all the boarder security. They made us drive through winding cones. Someone said, "They know what was in the coach before you ever got to the guard."
If you go to Canada, make sure you have passports. Health records for Dogs and Cats and that you unplug you Wireless Router if it has a USB modem. It turns out the Verizon Modem we use told the router we were roaming in a foreign country but the router didn't tell us. We thought it odd that it worked as the time before we were in Alaska and Canada, the phones went off instantly. We thought perhaps we were getting a signal from across the lake. The bill for 3 days, 24 hours a day was $300+. I whined and moaned and they cut it down to $160.

Everytime I cross the border, they try to cross me up. Do you have any firearms, do you have any amunition, how's the hunting, and then finally, what do you use for protection--to which I replied "Trojans". The guy choked up laughing and waved us on.

I guess you ar right Ken. I don't blame him. For those coming up 57 to Du Quoin, be very careful when you cross the river. I have never not seen a cop, or 6, the first 20 miles in Il. Keep your speed to the posted one.
I loved the Canadian trip across from Port Huron, Mi. to Niagra Falls. Just keep in mind the fuel is more expensive.

I appreciate everyone's impute. Even those who
don't know Du Quoin is in Illinois.
Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, I will get it straight.
I received some discouraging new this mooring. I
travel with a parrot. No! Not the wife, an African Grey
parrot. 1st you need a Cities permit to take out and bring
a parrot into the US. 2nd You need a import export permit
to take across the border. Third pet needs a passport.
4th Veterinarian needs to issue a certificate that
the bird is healthy and is not a carrier of any communicable
disease. Then when I get to the border I need to fill out an
application Designated Port Exception permit get it signed
by Fish and wild life service and pay $251.00. Now
I need to have a border vet check the bird and stamp a bunch
of the paper work. This is only done by appointment so I
need to phone ahead. After this I can go into Canada.
Now for getting out. When I enter I need the Canadian side
to stamp the paper work also. When I get ready to leave I
need to phone ahead and make another vet appointment.
get the paperwork stamped on both sides of the border
and then I'm back on the road. Every one of these things
cost something. Example $100.00 for Cities permit, $16.00
at crossings in addition to vet fees. I am pretty sure I'm
going to take the southern route. My traveling companions
can go the northern route if they like. We can meet back up
around Elkhart IN.
