Anyone in the Rockford Illinois area that can help a newbee in trouble? Lives in Madison WI. He bought a CMC in Michigan and got as far as Rockford when a bag went down. State patrol made him pull off and coach is at an RV dealer. I told him to call the RV place and tell them not to touch it. Then get a emergency air bag inflation kit from Jimmy K., jack it up, install the kit and air the bag up. That will get him home, but he is not real familiar with GMC's yet and may need a little help. Anyone available?

How well does he know mechanical things??
If the bag is just leaking, thats one thing but if the system is down, a new bag wont help. Does the opposing bag air up?
I was thinking the same thing, threaded rod bolted on. I think there is a severe speed restriction but it would get him home....
I am in Waukegan, far East side of the state, he is mid state if he is near Rockford. I would guess a good 2 to 4 hours drive for me. I am not the best mechanically inclined person but I know some things. If he needs to see a face, I could go....

Larry, It is 12:30 AM. If you are still up call me at home with additional details. My number is on the black list. It is 140 miles up there and I would rather fix this tonight or very early in the morning. It is in the 90's here during the day with very high humidity so EARLIER IS BETTER. Outside temp right now is only 74.

Ken and others,
I talked with him in some detail. It appears that he is fairly mechanically competent. He had that bag replaced before he left Michigan and thinks that the leak is in the system, not in the bag. That is why I suggested the emergency airbag inflation kit. Other bag has aired up just fine, and pump runs continuously. He is at home now, waiting for a call from the RV facility, and plans to call Jimmy K. this morning. Depending on when the kit arrives, he will likely be working on it either Saturday or sometime next week. Is that kit available locally, so he would not have to wait for it to come from California?
I honesty had not thought of the threaded rod, but would not be a bad idea to have it along in case it is something related to the bag. Stand by, I should be able to call him sometime after 8:00 this morning.

sounds like maybe the supply hose on that side came off or split since the compressor runs all the time. the other side isn't down so it must be all connected there. he should trace the hoses from the compressor valves to the air bag.

I'd try the Schrader valve first. I got the proper size 1/4" ones with no adapter needed at the local Ace Hardware. He should be able to get one at his local Ace or an Ace between there and Rockford.

The day after I bought my GMC, 1/2 way home with it, I couldn't figure out
how to raise the right rear. Nor could I find a Shrader valve at the
available locations in Bogalusa, LA. I wound up with a 1/4-1/8 reducer and
a 1/8" pipe plug. I had to use a cleaning nozzle on an air hose to inflate
the bag, then insert the plug before all the pressure escaped. It took a
couple of practice tries, but I kept enough air in the bag to get me back on
the road.

afxok wrote on Fri, 16 July 2010 09:58 | Hi All,
This is Tony, I'm the actual newb that Larry posted about. Wow, you guys really rally around someone who needs help fast!
I'll head out tomorrow morning and try the direct Shraeder valve first. I've got an infiltration kit on the way from Jim K. too in case I have problems with the direct valve. If anyone knows the exact size for the fitting on the bag that would be great since I could get those parts tonight.
I'll keep you all posted as it develops.
Thanks!

I called Larry and got Tony's number. I am probably the closest one to Rockford and Mad City. Tony and I will meet up sometime later today. I'll be taking a floor jack, tools, fittings, 12V compressor (the HF valvair clone) and a spare bag.
We should be able to git'er done. If not you blacklisters may get a call.

Just go to Ace Hardware and get the right size schrader valve for $3.00 and forget the brass adapter shown in the photo.
