Well, I tried to dump my tank for the first time - it is completely full. But it is like the waste valve (standard for 26' '73, rear bed) is welded closed. I doubt anybody has tried to open it for a year.

Now what? Do I apply a slide hammer to pull the handle? Jury rig some kind of gear puller thingee for the handle?

Should I have a sanitation service pump the tank *before* breaking the valve?

Enquiring minds need to know!

Is the waste valve still the original Thetford valve? If so, you could try to unbolt it from the waste tank. However, you will obviously spill all the contents out on the ground, so maybe having the tank pumped may not be such a bad idea.

Dave,

If it is original, then it is the older version Thetford valve with a stainless plate on the tank side. If it has been changed, you will have to figure out what you have.

If it is a Thetford valve, then I'm not just sure how that could happen. Don't be too grievious with the operating rod because the side can be broken where the rod hooks into it.

Something to try real early.....
Get under there (with it appropriately shored up) and take a soft hammer with you. Tap the valve all over but particularly the edges and keep pulling and maybe it will break what ever is sticking it.

Good Luck

Matt

Oh man, good luck Dave. I would also try to tap it gently to free it up. Let us know what happens then I will tell you what happened when mine stuck. You do not want to know yet.

Dave,

Refer to this photo, check to see if the valve stem will rotate. If so, it may not be too corroded. If it is stiff to rotate, then where the stem exits the valve body note the stainless cover. Remove the screws, giving you some access to the stem and spray a penetrating liquid everywhere. Also, remove the dump hose and spraying the penetrating liquid over the face of the slide valve. The slide valve blade to body inferface is plastic to plastic on the outside and really binds after it has been sitting for while. The stem can break-loose from the valve blade if you put too much force on it (like with a slide hammer) and then you have perhaps the worst case.

Good luck and let us hear back.

Guys...he's asking for "strategy". My "strategy" would be to get someone else to do it!

mine got harder and harder to operate. finally it stuck open, fortunately. with the tank empty i replaced it. mine was a newer version and has a plastic slide. the groove got filled with grit and toilet paper which jammed it up.

Dont come back to let us know til after you shower.
I have a 12volt gate at the black tank exit. I operate it often to keep it from sticking. I have a manual gate at the end of the 3 inch pipe so I can run the 12v anytime. After it stuck I like hitting the thing about once a week.
