I was at O'Reilly's Auto yesterday and my store has 1 gallon
containers of the Rotella T on sale for $11.99. Isn't this one
of the oils still recommended for our flat tappet engines?

Mike,
That's the one that replaced the Rotella some of us had been using forever. The one you pictured (at least last year) was not ok'ed for our use. Maybe that has changed, but I'm still using the older Rotella, the one befor the one in your pic.

As I understand the oil situation, and I am certainly not an expert.
If the Rotella T or any oil has the CJ-4 rating it has the new lowered level of ZDDP to protect catalitic converters of the newer diesel trucks with them. My conversation with Dick Paterson 3 weeks ago about how I could not find the Rotella T synthetic with the old higher levels of ZDDP resulted in my asking about Amsoil. He said it is of a higher refinery cracking level than other synthetics. Rotella, Mobil 1 and others are made from oil cracking level 3 but Amsoil is level 4 which is purer. I have one of his engines and cannot afford to replace it so I now use Amsoil for flat tappet engines with a zink of over 1200 and phosperous over 1300. Its price is high but it is insurance hopefully. He also said their oil filters are very good.

I am now having problems locating Rotella T and the correct Mobil 1 at my local Walmart. My plan was to switch my new engine, with 4,000 miles on it, back to Mobil or Rotella. I guess I will be using the Delo 400 again with added zddp. Seems no matter which oil I begin using it turns out to be wrong stuff or I can no longer locate it. Got 4 more bottles of zddp. Got to find something when I run out of the stuff.

Dear Brother, ...any place associated with trucks should have Shell Rotella T.
It's what most truckers use.

Mike,

I drive Double Trouble at the speed limit, if it is 70 I go 70 and with a
3.21 final drive turning 225/70-16 Kumho tires that puts me at around 2800
RPM. I find that at this speed I burn a bit more oil than I like. To address
that problem I decided to go with single viscosity Royal Purple 40W
synthetic oil. I spoke to their tech service department and was advised that
it had over 1150 ppm of zinc and 1200 of phosphorus. Hopefully this will
bring the oil consumption down with the added bonus of only changing my oil
once a year no matter how far I drive.

Unfortunately Royal Purple is EXPENSIVE; $9.25 a QUART! The Napa shop here
in Humble booked the sale against a customer that gets a discount and he
charged me $7.45.

Regards,
Rob M.

OK,

The Rotell bottle showed is the post-2007 formula. The pre-2007 formula met the standard of CI-4+ The post-2007 formula is the standard of CJ-4. CJ-4 oil is suppose to have no more the 800 ppm of zinc and phosphorus (ZDDP). CI-4+ oil was suppose to be 1200 ppm of ZDDP.

So what you saw or bought has 2/3rds of the ZDDP that the original Rotella had. For a while after 2007 people were buying synthetic Rotella because it was a very slow seller and there was a lot of it around at the CI-4+ standard. That stuff is now gone and the synthetic Rotella you are now finding is CJ-4 rating.

All of that said, the new Rotella is still much better than buying almost all of the automotive rated oils today because that stuff in made to the automotive standard of SM which is much lower that the current CJ-4 stuff.

It appears the higher ZDDP requirement is only necessary on newly rebuilt engines. Lots of people run the lower ZDDP oil in well broken in flat tappet engines.

That said, I stocked up on the higher ZDDP oil just as they were changing over and I use the old CI-4+ oil in my John Deere, my GMC, and all of my older (1970s and 1980s) motorcycles. Why take the chance.

If the lower ZDDP oil available now concerns you, then look for an oil that is rated for CI-4+ ONLY, without the CJ-4 rating on the label. You can also find a source for ZDDP and add some to whatever oil you are currently using.

I didn't get to the GMCWS Rally until about 2:00 on Monday. I was able to catch the tail end of Joe Mondello's talk on engines. One of the last things he talked about was oil. His recommendation is to use Shell Rotella-T. He doesn't recommend using racing oil because it does not have the additive packages for extended use and has a short drain interval. I have been using Valvoline VR-1 "racing oil", so I asked him about that. He said that is the exception as it is not formulated strictly for racing purposes and is more of a "weekend warrior" racing oil and it was OK. It has high levels of ZDDP Which may or may not be a factor, but it makes me feel good to have it. I also add a detergent additive (Alamite CD-2) just in case.
