Wayne ,
I have a wire Hair Jack Russell, he is fast as Lightening but no contest,
for a Squirrel .
I was walking him on a short leash one day , a Squirrel decided to leap off
the Telephone Pole ,he was using and he caught him, in midair.
The solution that I have found, that works best is one, of those Wire Traps,
below my Birdfeeder.
I have caught three, a day ,several days.
The only problem ,is that you must relocate them at least five Miles ,from
your location.
Paul Cashman
Riverdale GA.

Nothing take's care of a Squirrel problem better than a Jack Russell
Terrier. :)

Catch and release! Now, that's the way to go. I just can't go for shooting them, but I do kill the mice. The cat I got for my shop took care of the rats. Even had mice chew up wiring in our BMW-in our garage. As they build in the fields, the mice look for new homes. But killing squirrels troubles me-softie that I am.....Thx, Michael GEMRECS

had a squirrel eat through the wall vent and made a nest in the attic. what a mess. all the insulation tore up, began chewing the 2x4 studs. Finally got him out and put wire mesh over the now destroyed vent cover...

Yup, They gotta go !

Michael,

IF I had any qualms about dispensing with the pests, they would be
considerably allayed by the fact that some other animal, probably the local
fox, is getting a good meal each night. I always leave the squirrels where
they fall and they're gone the next morning. The fox doesn't dig holes,
attack bird houses, eat plant bulbs, denude pear trees, nor in any other way
disturb our tranquility. My conscience is clear.

Huh! Down here, we're raised on quail & doves full of bird shot so them
mutations don't bother us much! Shoot, we still use lead split shot on our
fishin' lines. No tellin' when them catfish are gonna start growin' horns.

I have, indeed, eaten my share of squirrel, rabbit, 'coon, 'possum, etc. My
Alabama country grandparents were good teachers: Eggs scrambled with hog
brains were a favorite.

Never could develop Grandpa's habit though: There was always some of
yesterday's cake still on the table (covered over night with a cloth). On
really good mornings, there were some squirrel heads left too. He'd crack
the skulls with his teeth to get to the brains to eat with the cake. Yummy?
Even I never tried that one 'cause I didn't like the cold grease and there
was no microwave to warm them -- getting the wood stove fired up was too
slow. Granny NEVER used the electric stove -- it was a storage cabinet. I
doubt it was ever plugged in.

And there DARNED SURE weren't gonna be no outhouse in HER house!

I actually worked in the old Havahart factory in Ossining, NY. Part of the
building was used by a brake re-shoeing company. Had them do my TR6 Brakes.
It was the Steelcase desk factory at one point also. I worked in a paper
conversiion plant. Interestingly enough(?), we would shoot rats after work
with a .22 RWS rifle as they ran along the banks of the Hudson eating
whatever washed ashore. That thing packed a punch.

I used to catch and release. My neighbor asked me not to throw any
more rattlesnakes over the fence.
A rodent in the wild is part of the food chain. A rodent in the yard
is after food, and, of course, around here they are usually followed
by snakes, looking for the rodents. Once my wonderful neighbor quit
putting out 25 lbs of bird food every week, the mice, rats and snakes
quit coming around.
Anything that comes in my yard has to deal with my female Daschund.
4 rabbits, one snake, countless mice and rats, and 6 birds.

With this thread, I've been getting real hongry right up through the
brains and eggs but the sucking of squirrel heads the next day stopped
me in my tracks, too. Guess the difference between AL folks and LA
folks is they suck squirrel brains, we suck the heads of crawdads.

Gene, don't go bringing up any disparaging remarks about catfish into
this. They are number one for the table! No contest! {:>)

Hey, If I can catch and release Opossums that entered my shop and mauled my cat, I can catch and release squirrels. Lived at Hollister, Pacific Grove, Fort Ord and Oxnard California and had no problems with the ground squirrels. My RV was stored for six months in the country near Santa Barbara and still no problems with the ground squirrels. We all have different stories! Here the squirrels come into the townhouse yard for acorns from the oak tree and to the vacant lot next door for the pecans.
