I know of several GMCs with concealed latches. Most use a spring loaded
pull-chain door latch at each side, most with a chain between them which can
be reached through the grille. Pulling the chain down disengages the latch
on each side from its striker.
At least one owner installed electric door lock operators to extend and
retract similar latches.
Because of the need to bond mounting fixtures to the inside of the lids and
to fill the old operator holes, most do the mod just before painting.
Frank Jenkins' and Ray Bingham's coaches come to mind immediately -- look
for them both at DuQuoin.

Great photos, Jim. Thanks. I think that's the route I'll take. Curious about the safety catch. Am I guessing correctly to think that after you push to release, you have to reach under and use a finger to lift the safety catch to fully open the hatch?
And re filling and painting. The instructions on JK's site (http://www.appliedgmc.com/images/hidden_latch.pdf) say to sand the edges of the plugged hole, fill with fiberglass resin, then sand and fill with bondo, sand and paint. Did you do that? I've never done any body work. The part that confuses me is the resin then the bondo. Won't the bondo "bond" to the metal screw heads that plug the hole?
Thanks again.

Yes, I see so many of these being done poorly and it starts showing up after
coulle years.
You need to understand that you need to have a very gradual bevel. This
gives more area for resen to bond to and when the resen rises or shrinks, it
is not noticable.
Going through college, I rebuilt wrecked Corvetts 63-67.
Proof to the pudding is after its been under the sun for couple years.
