Friends from many of these groups have been giving us suggestions to keep
the squirrels from eating our plants and bird food, and digging up the
flowers, and we tried another one of the purported solutions.
Hot peppers. We had already tried Cayenne pepper, to no avail.
Whizzed up a handfull of Serrano peppers in the blender and poured the
juice over the birdseed.
Let it dry and put a ring of the treated sunflower seeds on the ground
around the pulp from the blender.
Within an hour, the sunflower seeds were gone, and by nightfall, the
Serrano pepper pulp was gone, too.
Oh, yeah, they still eat or dig up the newly planted flowers that we
doused with the juice.
That myth busted.

Ron,
Have you tried lead? When dispensed from a $100 Daisy pellet gun from
WalMart, it has proven most effective here. One problem though, is that the
critters quickly learned that climbing our pine trees is unsafe: one tends
to fall out of them onto one's back and only bounce once. It's much more
safe, when there's the tiniest movement of the door on the big house, to
light out for the azaleas, avoiding climbing trees at all costs.
Living in the county helps. But since the next door neighbors live in the
city, that's a safe sanctuary. They WILL climb those trees.

You'd have to have one of thos Daisy/Thompson full-automatic BB machine guns
to make much of a dent around here. Climbing pine trees? We have between
3000 and 4000 of those. Even Dead-Eye Dick would be challenged.
I already knew the pepper would not work.
I've been told to get a cat. We have neighbor cats and we are nice to them.
They have fun in our yard, but they are also not up to the task.
The squirrels are still with us, but the mice, who have been the real
nuisance, have abated somewhat this year. I saw one of the reasons
slithering across the gravel driveway a couple of weeks ago, and his buddy
left a gift of an old skin in the flower bed next to the porch.
The Redhead does NOT like snakes. But she doesn't like mice, either.

Problem with that, Ken, is that the only person around here (nephew's
wife) that likes squirrel stew insists that I skin & gut them, and she
won't even share.
Everybody else is opposed to just killing the varmints.

Bet "if" you find one in the GMC, you won't find any mice. We used to have a big old pine snake up at the cabin and never had any mice as long as he was around.

A while back the field rats discovered our bird feeder. Should have
heard my wife. Pretty soon she had the kitchen window open a crack and
the pellet gun all set to go. Funniest thing you have seen. Her all
dressed up to go to her executive job stop by the window and pick one
of the critters off..
Kidding aside with all the different critters around here it is hard
to use traps so I use an 18" piece of PVC with a "T" fitting on each
end. Inside I place a mixture of 1/4 cup oatmeal and one tablespoon of
Plaster-of-Paris and place near one of the runs. Rats and mice love
the stuff and it binds up the internals. If one of the dogs or cats
eat the dead mouse there is no poison involved. Works good around
here...........Terry

In Northern Michigan we use "critter friendly" steel traps baited with peanut butter. My dad then spray paints them with orange paint and safely takes them 2 miles away.
If they come back and get trapped, well they try to swim underwater while in the cage. We haven't found the "michael phelps" type swimming squirrel yet!

We try to stay in the no-kill zone -- if the squirrels seem to be getting too much of the bird food, buy some corn and put it closer to their area of the yard. Keeps everybody happy.

I saw this post & called a family friend. He said that something called Flowers
of Sulfur would keep the snakes away and, when used in the flower bed, may even
be beneficial to the flowers. Most soil is deficient in sulfur anyway, so it
would probably make them bloom more. He didn't know if it would work on
squirrels, but he said that's what his .22 rifle is used for...

Nothing take's care of a Squirrel problem better than a Jack Russell Terrier

Uhm, Did you happen to read any of the comments about the " Squirrel Launcher ". Seems there are some animal activists out there.
ON THE OTHER HAND, the Jack Russels don't take all the glory....
My GREYHOUNDS are ex racers, and when they see that furry thing running across the yard, they are a shot heading for a bullseye.
The only advantage the squirrel has is he can climb a tree, but my Greys are asking how to use the chain saw...

Maybe something can be arranged. Why, do you have a squirrel invasion? LOLOLOL
I am just finishing up putting in a custom kitchen countertop. Unlike most homes that have standard sized ( depth ) lower cabinets, I have some that are 18" deep and at one point they grow out to standard 24", next to the stove.....
I have waited a long time to get this one done. and am very pleased with how it turned out. OH, Ahh, I might change the GMC COUNTER TOP someday too. ( GMC CONTENT )....
I'll see how things go and let you know. thanks.
