I'm ready to try to recharge my AC unit, and it seems that many people have had good luck using Duracool.
In checking with auto-parts stores in my area, no one seems to carry it (or have much knowledge on many things!). Is it only available on-line or is ot not available in some states?
If I don't use Duracool, is there any other alternative if I don't want to convert the system from the original R-12 that may be locally available?

The closest Duracool store to me is Worthington AG parts in Leesburg (Warsaw), IN. I buy it when I am in the area since it is about 80 miles over there.
Here is their locations page:

I should have mentioned that you can also have them ship it to you. Also this is the original Duracool and not HC12.
The people making HC12 got in trouble for making the stuff in violation of the Duracool Canadian patent. So they changed the formula just enough to avoid the patent infringement problem.
I looked up the applications to the EPA one time and both of the companies initially listed the same contents. Then a few years late after the patent problems you could see where the HC-12 people reapplied with a different formula.
I do not think it made a bit of difference in performance of the HC-12 product.

I contacted the folks at Bennet Cycle/Fox Tool (couldn't have been nicer and more helpful), and have some HC12a being shipped out. Thanks for the advice.
From what I've been able to find, either HC12a or Duracool should do the trick.

How about Canadian Tire? Come to think of it, there is a Walmart in Ft. Francis.

Thats because they are the same thing.

If you look up their contents on the EPA SNAP web site, you will find they are different but very similar. In their original application they were exactly the same (Blend A). Then later on they changed their mix slightly (Blend B) to get out of the patent problem. I do not think it makes a bit of difference. People have reported the same results using either product.
Here is some of the info on it from the EPA. I will have to look and find the actual change they made to HC-12. I believe Duracool is called Hydrocarbon Blend A and HC-12 is called Blend B. by by the EPA SNAP review.

I still say in the end both work equally well.
