Hi everyone! I just recently purchased a 1978 GMC 26' Hughes Model and when I was coming to a stop the vehicle stalled. Had a hard time starting it again but eventually it happened again just down the road. This time I could not get it started. Checks revealed that my rear battery was now completely drained no charge and my from battery is not only low on a charge but very warm to the touch.

Had anyone had this problem before? Please help! Thanks you!!

Paul

Usually heat is a sign of too much resistance in the circuit. Check for
proper tension on the alternate belt first. Then check all battery cable
connections for looseness and corrosion. If you have top post batteries,
(the ones with the large lead posts sticking up from the top of the battery
case) then unbolt and remove them from the posts. REMEMBER ALWAYS REMOVE
GROUND POSTS FIRST AND REPLACE THEM LASt!! Auto zone and many other auto
parts stores sell a special stainless steel battery post cleaning wire brush
that has two ends. One does the inside of the cable, and the other end does
the post. Clean all signs of corrosion off and re install the cables, making
sure that the ends of the cables do not have any corrosion growing inside
the insulation. If any is found, replace the cables with new molded end
insulated cables. After all the cables are secured, smear a non conductive
grease, I have used vaseline many times here, just because I'm too cheap to
buy the real high tech silicone stuff. Make sure the batteries are fully
charged, and after you start the engine, check across the + and - terminals
of the battery that the alternator lead connects to and measure the voltage
with a good voltmeter. You should have between 13.8 volts DC to 14.5 or
slightly higher. If your charging system is charging above 15.0 Volts, then
you probably have a failed regulator in the alternator. If you have 12.8 or
so, then you probably have a failed alternator or battery isolator. That is
the finned aluminum thing with three binding lugs onto which are attached
several larger red conductors. If you have alternator charging voltage at
the post that the alternator wire attatched to it, and battery voltage on
either or both of the other wires, then your isolator is bad and needs to be
replaced. After that, Check ALL ground wires that you can find for tightness
and/or corrosion. If you find any, fix the problems, and recheck. That will
usually get you going again, unless Murphy has been in there fixin your
wiring. Hope these basic check steps will help.
