Ken,
Yes, there are those who have split the OEM shroud and there are pictures of
a couple of different techniques. You might be able to find them with a
search of GMCMHPhotos.com. But even the result would not be as easily R&R'd
as the fiberglass versions nor would it provide the complete radiator
coverage they offer. Considering the cost of the FG shroud, not worth the
trouble, IMHO.

Don't forget that the 77-78 shroud is the full-coverage shroud
that the
replacement ones are copied from. We have two 77 GMCs and I
split both of them. Of course, that was before I learned how to
operate a camera. (Best excuse I can think of)

I'd forgotten that the '77's & '78's already have a solid shroud instead of
the conglomeration of metal and rubber bits and pieces on the earlier
coaches.
Your split is similar to what I did to my Jenkins shroud except that I pop
riveted a piece of 1" aluminum angle parallel to the cuts and on each side
of them. Captive Tinnerman nuts on the upper angle at each side enable me
to reach straight up from the bottom with a socket on a long extension and
spin out the 3 screws on each side very quickly (especially with my 1/4"
battery powered impact wrench). 3 screws into the lower radiator support
across the bottom finish the job and the lower half of the shroud falls in
my hand.

Ken,
I have actually made a minor modification to the shroud as pictured. Now it takes removing 4 carriage bolts and two 5/16 bolts to drop the lower half of the shroud. I'd like to *see* your method...sounds simple...the old KISS principle. Maybe next time we are in there, we should take more pics of it for the albums. One more thing to add to the never ending "TO DO" list.....

Yes, why do you ask? Actually, I'm considering putting it back if I can find a cannister to replace it. The old one was soaked in fuel.
