Is the dual belt addition worth the effort?

It seems I'm in for a bunch of wrench time in the near future and planned to replace the alternator belt while I had the fan off. Alternator belts don't last real long in my service and it is tough to balance the load between the alternator and PS belts.

Yes, The dual belt is worth the minor cost of doing the replacement. Get two new belts at the same time. I was very lucky and the 2 belts that I bought has the same lot number embrossed/printed on the belt. Crank the PS pump all the way out, and adjust by using the Alternator adjustment. Killed the squeal caused by belt slippage.

Those that have them either swear by them or swear at them.

I don't use a dual pulley and there are hundreds or thousands of GMCers that don't either. If you have the tension adjusted right and are using the right belts there is no need for a dual pulley.

G'day,

Yes.

I was always retensioning the alternator belt, tried different belts, not much difference.
Last year I threw a belt with still 150 odd miles to my destination. Not wanting to deal with a hot engine,
I connected the house batteries to the solar system and drove on, I could leave replacing the belt untill the next day.
Now I have two belts, no adjustment no squealing and all for 45 mins work.

I've installed the dual pulley and would not go back. It's true that properly adjusted belts will not squeal and will work properly, but I'm not one for adjusting the belts with each oil change. (overstatement) My alternator belt squealed when I brought it back from Tom Hampton's place, and after I had some work done at Jim K's place. I bought the double pulley from Jim K and the belts - problem solved. Tom installed a 100 amp alternator, and that might be different than others, but the start-up squeal annoyed me.

Just as the man said - push the power steering out as far as you can, then adjust with the alternator.

It's working for me.

For the price of a pulley and a 2 belts, why not do it. If you do not like it, It is reversible by simply installing the old belts. No need to replace the pulley. My local AutoZone had the double pulleys under the counter. They swapped it on to my rebuilt alternator for free. Belts were $5.00 or $6.00 a piece. Just get two with the same lot number which is written on the outside of the belts.

Oh yes, a single broken belt will not strand you along the highway.

I've been very happy with my double pulley system. If I don't have to deal with a broken belt on the side of the road, it's good for me.

Then again, I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy!
