We were taking the coach to a favorite place to watch fireworks. First there was a squeal, I shut down the main engine and stuffed the coach in the approach of an intersection so passers could get around. When the engine cover was removed, and the engine started the noise that sounded like metal on metal squall was bad. Mary can still hear better than I though it was the water pump or the alternator (I couldn't tell). So, being three miles from home. we closed it up and turned about with the hope of getting home before it went critical.
About an half a mile back the track, BANG, a the coach got real quiet. It stayed running - that's nice - Still had power steering, no alternator light, on temperature rise. The vent temperature was rising - No AC. We got back to base and exhaled. Then the engine cover came up again and I noticed that there was no longer a belt on the AC compressor.
We discussed the situation and decided to turn about again and continue the plan for the evening.
Sometime before the fireworks started, I put my hand on the sheave for the compressor - it does not move, but the drive plate turns nicely. It's still new compressor time.
Two more sets of fireworks and a one day job next week and then I'll start taking things apart.

Could it be the AC clutch bearing has frozen?

Matt,
If it is only the clutch or the clutch bearing it can be replaced without disconnecting the hoses. The clutch or the bearing are both availble from Autoone.

Dennis,
I am sure it is, and with the noise it was making before it locked up enough to
reak the belt, I'm willing to bet that the inner race tore up or welded itself
o the nose of the compressor.
The compressor has been getting much noisier since I charged (it came to me dead
3.5years ago) the system with 134. I am planning to have it flushed and then
harge with HC12.

Do yourself a favor: Don't lift a 1000# replacement A6 up into that little
hole. Get a Sanden/clone instead. With a model that has 4 mounting ears
just behind the clutch, mounting is a snap -- almost direct fit on the A6
front mounting plate. Scrap the cast iron stuff and put a short brace at
the rear. You'll need new hoses unless you're very lucky and find one with
GM-type fittings, but it will be worth the cost for easier R&R, less HP
requirement, and just as good cooling.

Ken,
I heard that that is what you did, but how do I find the correct compressor?
There does not seem to be a listing anywhere that describes a Sanden with the A6 flange.
And remember, I'm in the rust-belt and there isn't much at the mens mall that is over 15 years old.
If you can help, I would appreciate it.

invoice on the Sanden clone that I bought

Matt,
I don't have a lot of experience or references to offer; I probably got
lucky in buying exactly what I needed "in the blind" through eBay. But that
decision was based partially in the information here:

That at least tells how to identify the different Sanden configurations.
Mostly, I counted on what I'd seen in junk yards: the Sandens and their
clones seem pretty consistent in their configurations, regardless of the
vehicle they're mounted on. Your shortage of such places is a true
handicap.
Since it will be a custom mount, I was willing to gamble that I could adapt
to 'most any variation I received. I was lucky, I suppose, that the
clutch-mount spacing was perfect; I didn't even need any washers for
spacers. All I had to do was slightly elongate the 4 mounting holes in the
mounting plate for the A-6. Since I had a serpentine belt, I got a Sanden
with a much wider (10 groove, IIRC) pulley than my belt (6 groove), making
alignment easy.
Most of the Sandens I see on eBay have double V-belt pullies; I'd expect one
of those to be close enough for simple adjustment to align.
I recently saw somewhere that most of the big truck Sandens use the GM-style
rear ports, for what that may be worth.
If I needed one myself, I'd be willing to gamble on:

As usual, Ken have provided valuable information. . .
I had tripped over that site late last night, but did not investigate it at any depth because I did not think a "service guide" would provide any information that I needed at this point.
I guess I remembered wrong about something else - too. I thought you had changed to the Sanden clone before you went to serpentine drive.
The current plan is to get all the parts in a heap, then take the then partly disassembled coach to a shop to have it flushed with the serious equipment and solvent. Then build it up and fill with HC-12A. I really only want to do this once.

Thanks, I found their site late last night (actually early this morning). They seem to be unsure about fit, but I guess you aren't. The part number is still good, but the price has gone up. Still a deal.
Should we get this rolled into the next parts interchange book?
This is actually getting better as we go. I was looking at a new A6 for ~6 GMC bucks and the work to go with that.

Matt,
The only thing you were really mistaken about is when I changed to
serpentine -- that was 5 years or so ago when I changed out the whole front
clip, which included #3 of the 3 serpentine systems for the 455 that Bobby
Moore and JR Slaten assembled 10 years or so ago.
Gary's groundbreaking use of the Nostalgic Air A-6 replacement should make
your selection easier. I'd noticed that yesterday but wasn't sure whether
the Chevrolet has the same configuration.
Nostalgic Air has a lot of Sanden rear caps on their bargains page -- says
they're new take-offs. I'll bet they have to swap those caps for the
GM-style for the A-6 sub.

Matt,
I'm attempting to conjure up a bracket set-up to mount it under
the headers on the right side of a Caddy 500.
However, it had the standard Sanden four bolt pattern on the
front and rear. Ken Henderson and others have
already sorted out the mounting on the GMC brackets, so it looks
like an easy fit-up. Certainly will be a lot
easier to lift up in place than that gorilla A6. I can't do that
anymore!LOL

Probably too late now for you, but my Sanden fit perfectly on top of the
Cad, just like the A-6 that come on it (using a custom bracket). But my
Sanden has hose fittings that let me cant them to the side; your GM style
hoses, running over the top, will interfere too much with the hatch. :-(
Frankly, I think mounting the Sanden under a cylinder bank as you describe
would be easier if you used my front mount -- it would be easier to add
compressor mounting brackets to it than to hang something from engine hard
points.

This is one big problem of the photo site. That photo of a Sanden A/C
compressor on a Cad 500 is virtually invisible. With administrative rights,
I went in and added this description of the photo "Sanden A/C Compressor
mounted low on the right of a Cad 500". Now the photo is visible by
searching for "Sanden", or "Cad", or anything else in the description. I
could have done the same thing by renaming photo but that might have messed
up the display order.
Any registered user can (and should) do this to his own photos. While
viewing the photo, just hit "Edit" in the "Additional Info" menu and add
your description. Just a key word or two will help immensely.
The point is, be sure to name and / or describe your photos if you want them
to be found. At least one or two photo descriptions in an album will make
it visible.
This is very important to enable us to find what we're looking for rather
than having to go through the whole very large box of photos.

I don't mean literally, but virtually.
You knew where to find it, Steve. Nobody else knows where it is or that it
even exists.
The only way to find it is to use the search engine. The only way for the
search engine to find a particular photo is by its name or description. Not
even album names are searchable, but can be found by a key word in the
description of a resident photo.
Hope that's a little more clear.

And in my opinion the photos that really need a caption change is Ken Henderson's "onan Larry II" album showing the installation of the Pertronix ignition on an onan. Searching on "Onan" will not find them.

Well, I tried. I changed the name to 'Onan Ignition Upgrade to Pertronix"
and added some description comments. I still didn't have much luck with
Search, but then, I never do. I couldn't figure out how to get to the
keywords field to add some of those. :-(
