Traversing America on the blue line roads provides a whole different prospective on our country. We have been on freeways a total of less than 100 miles so far and we are now in north central Ohio. We know the west well and lived in New England and the mid west while in grad school, but we really never saw much of either (head down, other end up and all that stuff one does in grad school).

We are struck by the lack of fences and the huge yards here. From NE through, IO, IN, IL and now OH rural America lives in a park. Homes are united by common lawns and gardens, not walled off from one another by opaque fences like is so common in much of the west. It makes for an entirely different concept of community. No wonder the political and media types stuck in condos and limos never even knowing a neighbor just don't get it.

Because of these huge open lawns rural America seems to live on riding lawn mowers - they are everywhere! And, interestingly, barking dogs are noticeably absent unlike our neighborhood in rural southern OR where you become edgy wondering what's up when the dogs stop barking.

Traversing the two lane roads is slow, but boy what a treat! We have enjoyed more small towns on this trip than we can ever remember. We will see how these observations hold up as we try to find non-freeway routes along the south side of the great lakes and on into the Maritime Provinces in eastern Canada.

Cheers,

Jerry

I drove Hwy 50 east to west a couple years ago. What a great experience that was.
Abandoned gas stations, old barns, etc.

We have about an acre lot here, no fences, always seems to be a lawnmower going within earshot. One of these days we'll get co-ordinated, line up all the lawn tractors and get it done in one go... just like the rows of combines on the prairies! Very Happy

Where in Ontario are you?
I have to go to Hamilton on July 7, then to North Bay on the 17th.

I'm in Stratford, between London and Kitchener.

Too bad you were not around a bit longer, the GMC Heritage Cruisers are having a rally at Kingston July 15-18.

For those of you wanting to do something different, on Friday July 16/2010, there is FREE yes FREE addmissions to the Hondy Indy Toronto event. There is an RV campground in north west Toronto(beside Wild Water Kingdom) where one can get from the campground to the Race track via public transit(eg bus).
There is also a KOA about 45 minutes from the track, north of Toronto right off highway 400. you would need someway to get from there to the park. I could accommodate a couple of coaches dry camping in my driveway. As I'm an official at the race I'd be going early in the morning and could five up to 4 people. There is public transit to the track from near my house. Sorry I can't get any deal on tickets for Saturday or Sunday.

Jerry, now you see why Teri and I love the two lane roads across the country. Never know what we will see.

I found an old gas station and the gas pump was set at 36 cents a gallon.
Wonder what year that was.

I was pumping gas in NJ in 1968, Amoco regular was 32.9 cents and 101
octane premium was 35.9 cents. On occasion, I pumped some into my 1960
Corvair...
