Handful to drive [message #90125] |

I keep reading all the posts about offset bushings and Urethane. I just know the toe has to be off, let it coast drives great under power it must toe in and is ditch to ditch white knuckes and a lot o sweating . We got under the coach and put it in drive and reverse everything looks tight no abnormal movement. Do you think I need to replace my control arm bushings, as far as I know everthing is original with 96K on the clock. I have never driven any othre GMC's but they have to drive better than this. I am also a little confused about the shocks I have KYB's on the front Rears (unknown as they have been painted). My coach was converted to 134A by PO it leaks out after 2 weeks, I bought a case of Duracool, I am sure PO changed the compressor to 134 compatible oil. Do I need to flush the system before I Duracool her? Thanks for all the help over the years. There just seems to be so many oppinions that it is confusing as to what works well

Tie rods are worn out, but your not seeing it, along with movement in the
rely arm and idler arm.
There are 4 relay joints to replace.

Brian,
You express something that has always been in the back of my mind. Most of
us have never driven a GMC except for our own. Some of us have driven more
than one but, I'll be, precious few of us have.
I always wanted to ride/drive in someone else's couch just to be able to
compare notes. It would sure help a lot. But, when we all get together they
stay parked and we go home just as ignorant as we came (with regard to the
understanding of the handling experience).
I know this, if it's as bad as you seem to indicate you probably have more
than one problem with the front end.

This is an excellent point. Randy Van Winkle and I did both sets of A-Arms and aligned our coaches on an extended California "GMC Project Time". We were both very pleased with how our respective coaches drove but did we drive each others? No. So, this spring, before Pueblo, while were were having a "Pre-Rally Project Time" in Missouri, we did just that.
The results were interesting. We felt my coach was straight as an arrow, but wallowed on the corners a bit because I have original air bags. Randy's coach was perhaps a tiny bit busier on the straight, but took corners like a champ with quad bags. Generally we could not find anything definitive; they were just different. But we were glad for the experience. It gives you a reference point.

a buddy said that the GMC was the best driving coach in the world when new and there is no reason that it shouldn't still drive that way if you are willing to do the repairs necessary.

Between your response and that of George Beckman is seems that this would be
something that could be worked out for the convention at Du Quoin.
What really sold me on the GMC was the way it drove and rode back when I
first drove one in 1976.
Mine doesn't drive like I remember. Front end seems tight. Loose tie rod
ends replaced. New linkage. Ride height adjusted. New Eagle alloys and
tired. I even put in the balancing powder after trying wheel weights.
Results? It still shimmies like a reptile starting at 50 and going on up.

Shades of lives past - Gymkhana - we know how to do that. Let's see, for classes we would have 23' and 26' and as a subclass on each, original bag or Qbag. Maybe we could also have a class split for black tank full or empty. Sooner or later we'll also have to have a class for street tires or race tires. <GRIN>

Hardie,
I have done rather extensive work on my '77 EII, 50k mile unit. All of Dave Lenzi's products, upper & lower ball joint bushings, heavier front sway bar, added rear sway bars, rear line lock system, Bilstein schocks, tie rod ends, drag links. Have aligned it several different ways & times.
Nothing in the old unit was particularly loose or worn out. Dave Lenzi's upper control arms did more for it than almost all of it put together. I will be glad to let any of the GMCers drive it at any rally where we are. Or if you're ever in Kingsland, Tx., come on over & take it for a drive.

Brian,
Your bushing are junk. Period. If the coach was parked since new
and never driven a mile, they would still be junk. The sheer weight
of the front end supported by less than 1/2: of soft rubber will move
the inner steel sleeves off center in the bushings as the rubber
deteriorates and crushes.

When we bought our coach we had JimB rebuild the entire suspension before we even drove it home. From that day you could drive it with two fingers and after adding the quad airbags it got even better. I really drives even better now than the day it came off the assembly line.
