The McAfee antivirus software expires in July on my Gateway laptop which I use to access the GMCnet. Renewal shows as $69 -- but on their website they have a special (ending 6/30) for $49 for McAfee 2010 -- perhaps the same thing but rebadged to blur the price difference between a new or a renewal. McAfee came preloaded and I have never had any problems.
What is everyone using -- what is recommended?
Thanks,
Dennis

I've been very pleased with software called "Webroot". I used McAfee for years (over 10) but when I got the new computer Webroot was recommended by a friend and it has been much more user friendly in my opinion.

If you are running XP with service pack 2 or better or Windows 7,
Microsoft Security Essentials, best of all, it is FREE.

Terry and David,
Thank you for the comments on Essentials..
My PC is running Vista -- I will check the MS site to see if they offer a download. If I should install essentials should I uninstall the McAfee first?

Jeremy,
Thanks for the input on Webroot -- I ran a version of their software on my now 10 year old Gateway.
I will look at their offerings if I don't go the MS essentials route.

Thanks Terry,
Everyday about this time, my computer starts to slow down -- as if it has been up too long and needs a nap. The MS essentials video did not want to load -- so I will try later.

Steve,
In my Google search for free anti virus I had found Avest, Avira and AVG -- all new to me -- so I appreciate your input.
I have various financial info on the computer -- so was reluctant to consider a FREE program to protect my info.

Dennis,
I have to side with Mr ERF on Norton and McAfee, they are a virus
ithin themselves. I have heard nothing but good about Microsoft
ssentials and will switch to it someday. I downloaded AVG free from
he Kim Komando site. Much faster and equal protection compared to my
ld Norton.

No sense to uninstall the McAfee unti it runs out.
Just what I did when I installed AVG after the
trial McAfee ran out. I'm still running three
computers on a paid 3-system McAfee setup.

I have been using AVG Free for years on multiple PCs running XP, Vista, and Win7. You can not even tell it is there performance wise unless you happen to be using your PC when it is running scans which I have set up for once per week in the middle of the night. When you look for AVG make sure you specify FREE since they seem to be trying to hide it. Also, they seem to have started bugging me to upgrade to a paid version which I keep declining. The price justifies the bugging I think and the performance is great - it has caught attempts to do bad things too.

IMHO, the best one you can use is PCTools Soyware Doctor and Anti Virus. You download it and pay online. I have used it on all my personal and Business PC's for 5 yrs now. It finds crap that Norton and McAfee don't. I buy a 10 PC package every year.
It is voted best by PC magazine. I concur.

AVG is free. Works well. I highly recommend it to my Windows customers. Be
careful, though, because there are big buttons to get you to upgrade to a
more robust version that does I don't know what. The basic does what needs
to be done.
http://avg.software-av.com/
Also, after you install it you'll be asked to upgrade for the fee based
version. Don't do it. It isn't necessary unless you'd feel better.

That is the same deal with Avast. They advertize heavily ofr you to take their pay for version. I have used the free version for years on multiple machines. I use it because it does not take much resources and stays out of your way.
I liked Norton and many of my clients use the corporate version for hundreds of machines. I personally do not think it is appropriate for small clients and home users.
I would recommend free AVAST or free AVG for home users.
