Well, tonight we lost the ps forward rear tire. Full blow out of the side wall but fortunately no damage to the air bag, rim or fiber glass. About 150 miles back we heard a strange noise from that area, stopped and could not find anything wrong. We drove on. About 100 miles ago we stopped again and still nothing obvious. 50 miles back we stopped for about 15 minutes, looked all around and still could not find anything wrong. A few miles east of Rockwell City, Iowa, the outside sidewall let loose. Road side assistance came from about 50 miles away (why not from the near by town????) and we limped back to a tire store in Rockwell City that said it had a tire of the right size in stock.

We purchased these Toyo Open Country tires in Jan 2007. They all have date codes in late 2006 so they certainly are not "old". We don't know what happened. We have about 45,000 miles on this set with lots of tread left. All of them show the same even wear pattern so there must have been something in the road that weakened the sidewall enough to blow out 150 miles later. Anyway, no harm, no foul and we are "camped" in the parking lot of the tire place.

The bad news is the only tire of the correct size and rating is a Firestone which is far from my favorite tire. So is life.

Jerry

Do you carry a "thumper" such as an aluminum
baseball bat to whack the tires every so often
to check for abnormalities? I believe that is
what the long haul big rig drivers do to check
their tires every so often (every stop?).

I thought that the purpose of "thumping" the duallys was to determine
if one was under inflated and not sharing the load. What would
thumping a single tire signify that wasn't obvious? As to Mac's
problem my guess is that he probably damaged the sidewall cutting a
corner too close, as we all have done. The PS front rear tire is the
one gets this abuse most often.

Supposedly, someone who is "in the know" can
tell if one is about to go bad. I don't have
that knowledge, but apparently the different
sound is quite obvious when you thump a tire
that is low in pressure or has some other defect.

One of the reasons we purchased the RB Royale that we did is because the tire were only 2yrs old. I-70 on the way to Estes Pk. felt a vibe a the dinette ws really shaking and the boss said the panel next to her was shaking. Stopped an looked at all 6, nothing apparent. Drove on and it got worse. Stopped at a rest area in CO and jacked up all 3 on the rite side and did a through exam. Spin,,,look,,,hand across the tread. Nothing. @d miles later,,,,BAM,,,left rear front!!!!!2000 bucks damage. DEnted the sde above the rub strip, took out the gen. door and T skirt. Never deflated. Yes the tires were PURCHASED 2 yrs. before,,,,,,NOT 2yrs old.It was a mix and the one that blew was the oldest at 6.NICE,,,,,,,PL

I had a Bridgestone do about $1800 damage and the company paid for the
repair and
replaced the tire. When I mentioned my experience to Ron Tase who had
just had a
similar experience without major damage, they replaced all 7 tires.
