Hi all,
The photo/video business is changing really quickly. As Steve indicated there are easy to use quite capable video cameras, as Gene said there are wifi enabled memory cards and there are really high quality video capabilities built into most of the higher end DSLRs. Even most point and shoot cameras have quite good video in addition to really good still image production.
The iPad doesn't use ports such as USB, instead it relies on wireless network connections (wifi, G3 or Edge for intermediate range and bluetooth for short range) for most everything from connecting external storage devices, cameras and the like to keyboards and other peripherals that normally connect to computers via an external port such as USB or FireWire. There is one universal port that serves as both input and output via adapters. One is a video out so you can connect to a flat panel or projector, another is a secure digital memory card reader, etc. That same universal port also serves as the means to recharge the iPad and to connect it via wire to a USB port on a computer to synch content between machines automatically any time the two are connected. If you down load for free or purchase content (applications, music, movies, lectures, college courses, etc.) on the iPad they will automatically be loaded onto your computer as well. If you download or buy on your comp
uter, those things (if you want them to) will be automatically downloaded to your iPad. Slick arrangement.
The iPad is not a computer in the traditional sense of the word as it does not use a hierarchical file system with folders and files that you name and move around. Instead, each application keeps track of the kinds of files it is designed to handle and shows those to you in a list any time you launch that application. The last thing you were working on or viewing when you left that application is what you see when you launch it the next time. If you launch an application designed to view .pdf files, only .pdf files show up in the list the next time you launch that application. Same for photos, word processing, video, DVDs, presentations, spread sheets, maps, etc. It is both liberating and also can be a bit frustrating for those of us coming from the world of hierarchical file systems.
There are a zillion applications available to do most everything you could imagine. Many of those now mimic the behavior of hierarchical file systems so the transition is easy.
For life in a GMC for an extended period of time the iPad is perfect because it is so small (about the size of a thin hard cover book), very light weigh, it has an exceptional screen that you can see in both dim and bright light inside or outside. The battery lasts 8 to 10 hours of continuous use or two or three days of intermittent power use such as we do. I think our lap top has only been turned on once since we left home and that is for Sharon to manage her part of the portfolio. She has not yet selected from the many financial management applications available for the iPad. When she does I think about the only time we will use the laptop is for image adjustments/manipulations for photos loaded into our Aperture (professional image management software) library. That now houses over 20,000 images from our business and personal libraries, far too many to handle effectively on the iPad.
So, while it is fun to kid around as we did in the old Mac vs Windows days, the iPad completely erases those lines. It works equally well with both. Highly recommended for GMC use no matter what kinds of home computers or lap tops you now use!
Thanks to those who have offered travel suggestions and kind comments for our three month journey.
I will upload images of the things we have done on our coach in prep for this trip when we get to a place with high speed internet access. Staying on the two lane roads keeps is in small town America where we mostly see slower internet connections not well suited for moving photos around.

On our quick road trip from Fremont to Orange County and back my wife was on the iPad most of the way. Having the internet available going down the road is a boon to us. Those of you who already have G3 internet cards for your laptops know what I'm talking about.
For me the iPhone was a great shift in technology. It was the first device I had that would get to the internet from (almost) anywhere. Add to that the ease of syncing contacts with my laptop, music, podcasts, and backups it was by far the best phone I'd ever owned - still is.
When we were stuck with a bad fan clutch I used the maps app on the ipad and found a half-dozen nearby parts stores. Of course after help from Jim K I called Larry's auto parts (who wouldn't?) they delivered the part to us and we were on our way. I remember, not too long ago, when it would be phone books and pay phones!
It's true - life is good in a GMC - and with an iPad!
