Hi,
I had been having problems with my new (last year) thetford toilet.
It was not drawing water to flush.
RV dealer said I needed to run vinegar & water through it to dissolve the deposits. (It was NOT a warranty item).
They said they'd do it for $ 100/hr, or I could do it myself.

I elected to do it myself, of course.

Now, how do I do it ? One RV tech said 2 gallons of vinegar to 10 gals of water. The other guy said 1 qt of vinegar to 10 gals of water..

Use white (distilled) vinegar and NOT any
fruit vinegar (apple, wine, etc.).

It won't hurt your pipes or rubber fittings.

I'd use the 2 to 10 ratio, at least for the
first tank run through the head. The smaller
dosage would probably be good for maintenance.

CLR will do the same thing.

But CLR (oxalic acid as I recall) if not properly diluted will cause damage to system components, especially if it sits. White vinegar is already dilute, usually 5% acetic acid, and you can use it straight without damaging anything. Plus, you can use it in the potable water system and not worry about getting every bit of it out.

CLR would be a bear to flush out. I use it to clean the little circulating pumps in our cat's dishes as we have very hard water here. The CLR removes the calcium just great, but it takes alot of rinsing to get all of it removed, even though the pumps are disassembled... I mean alot of rinsing!

Yes, I wouldn't want to be drinking CLR.

How do I get the vinegar/water mixture into the system? Pour it in the head? Or try it through the outside fitting?
I'm assuming I pressurize the system with the water pump, let it sit for a while --( How long?)-- then keep flushing it through, until vinegar is all out. Is that right? Suggestions solicited.

In the same way you suck the "pink stuff" anti-freeze
through the system when you winterize. OR, if you just
want to do the toilet, start with empty water tank, put
the vinegar/water mixture into the tank using a funnel
and jugs.

Flush the toilet until you are sure that some of the
mixture has filled all of the passages of the toilet.

Let sit a few hours. Repeat the procedure until you
have emptied the tank.

You may want to at least partially fill the freshwater
tank and then flush the whole system.
