My little girl, almost 7 months old, is moving too much in her sleep to safely stay on one of the dinette fold downs anymore. Wife went out and bought a toddler rail figuring we'd start using the bottom bunk. Toddler rail is too wide. Spent a couple hours cutting it down, reinserting the springs to make it "removable" and finding new plastic/rubber donuts to cover the cut ends.

All is good and hopefully tomorrow after work we are off to the space and rocket museum in Huntsville followed by a night at Smith Lake in N. Alabama. I might get to really enjoy this whole hallmark Father's Day weekend stuff!

Any chance of gettting some more info on what you did? I am going to be in
this boat in a few months. I have been trying to figure out how I am going
to keep my son on his bed.

Camping with kids is GREAT, we had a travel trailer and both of our children grew up "campers". I can remember building a make-shift crib for our trailer dinette area........wonderful memories !

That seemed like yesterday and now my kids have their own toddlers........

ENJOY THIS TIME, IT GOES BY WAY TOO FAST !!!!!

Our daughter was four years old when we bought our coach in 2003. She loved sleeping in the top bunk, except one night she fell out of bed! Scared the heck out of us, but she slept right through it. Fortunately she wasn't hurt, however to prevent future occurences my wife made a "gate" out of elastic and mesh that we attached to the seat belts that the bunk hangs from. Our daughter is too big now (going into 7th grade - where did the years go?) to sleep in the top bunk, but we still have the contraption (maybe for our grandkids?).

Years ago when we had our kids traveling with us we would take the face off the bottom sofa and place it between the top bunk and the support straps. This gave an outside "wall" to prevent the kids from falling from the top bunk.

We're sorting this out, too.

Zoe Dell is just about to turn 1 in a couple of weeks. We've only had
the coach for a month but the two times we've been out, we baby-gated
the back bed. She gets three big windows and loves it. It's like a
playpen back there for her.

http://www.desmondcrisis.com/pix/20100523-doranbeach/20100523-doranbeach/img_0331.jpeg.html

The problem is when both of us and the dog try to fit back there with
her. It's a little tight!

We've kicking around ideas like a hammock, a hanging bunk in the back
bed over our feet, gating the floor space between the seats on the
dinette with the table out, etc. The back area would be best becuase it
give us space after she's gone to sleep.

Our coach was redone and the forward bunk bed wasn't in the new plan.
We may try to restore it.

One of the ideas for a bed rail was a tailgate cargo net. We're still
working this out and interested to see how you guys have solved it.

Same thing happened to our guy when he was little. We used some of those
colorful webbing net deals that you see on the back of small pickup trucks
at the back of the pickup bed. Pretty strong and easy to set up.

Some really good suggestions here. I like the webbing for the top bunk. Fortunately we're only plus one child right now, so the bottom bunk works. We bought a basic expandable toddler rail from target. It's two long rails that slide between a mattress and boxspring with "feet" on each end. These feet face up and catch both sides of the mattress. Above the outside foot is a little structure with some fabric that creates about a 10 inch high barrier over the mattress. The problem I found in the GMC was the long rails, even at their shortest, were too long between the feet. We needed 26" to create a tight fit from the wall to the couch edge and the tightest setting was 31". So I had to cut the rails down. Of course, the rails are sleeved from each side, which is how it becomes expandable with little pins that lock in holes at each end. So cutting off the ends causes you to lose the locking hole and the pin, plus it makes a rough edge for the outside rail. Plus both rails have to be cut because each one is longer than 26".

Anyway, I cut them down, pulled out the pins, redrilled the holes, reinserted the pins and found rubber sleeves at Lowes that cover the rough edges. Then I put it back together and I have 26" arms. One foot goes under the couch rail by the wall and then braces between the wall and the cushion and the other comes out the front and holds tight to the front of the couch cushion. The actual guard piece I didn't modify, but it's too high to fold down flat to the couch so I may cut it down a bit to try and get it to sit flat before the next trip. That way we don't have to pull out and disassemble the rail every morning, but it's no big deal if we have to since I kept the pin system.

Thanks,
