Lake Placid GMC Wed, 16 June 2010 18:04
Jim Wagner

While camping this week we met some folks that were taking out their, new to them, GMC. It was a nice looking 1977 Lake Placid model. Does anyone know the story behind the Lake Placid model.
Photos are at.

Brook Park, oh

Here are a few details for what its worth.
The Lake Placid was also called Sterling Mist. It was the last "one off" made by GMC as a GMC Motorhome show coach. I am not sure which RV shows it was displayed at. The floor plan was an "entertainment floor plan". Original pictures can be seen on pages 304 & 305 of my GMC history CD and is used by Tom Lins on ebay for his manual DVDs. I have a couple of other interior pictures somewhere, i'd have to locate them.

The original Lake Placid was owned for many years by a GMC Great Laker and I had lost track of it. IF this one is the same one, it has been modified considerably and has lost any value as an original one off, sad but true.

I think the original design was an outstanding show coach, in my opinion the changes were not an improvement on the original design.

Well.......this got me to thinking, and that could be dangerous. Many years ago I had been told by a GMCer in the know that the Lake Placid and Sterling Mist were one in the same show coach, mainly a name change. Now I am beginning to wonder. The coach recently shown as the Lake Placid has too MANY differences from the Sterling Mist factory photos that I have. Looks to me like the same entertainment floor plan, but with many details changed.

Cinnibars note that two were made doesn't make sense to me either. GMC had always built one of each "one off" for shows, each one unique, addressing different market areas, why would they spend money on a duplicate?

So...... did GMC build two show coaches with the same floor plan, but different trim? Were there two coaches, one called Sterling Mist and the other Lake Placid? Anyone out there that can provide further details?
Please keep me posted.
