I have a source for cans of R12 at probably about $20.00 per can. I need to convert a 1990 Ford van after fixing a few o ring leaks and I need to do a complete rebuild on the GMC A/C system (compressor, hoses etc). The van (4.5 lbs R12) will take 6 cans of R12 ($120.00) or 4 cans of Duracool ($40.00) and the GMC about 4 to 5 cans R12 ($100.00) or 3 cans Duracool ($25.00). What if anything is gained by using the R12 with a difference of about $150.00? Thanks for your input.

Nothing that I can think of.
Be real careful using "reclaimed" R-12 if that is what you are getting. Most of the R-12 available today is recycled or reclaimed. The last bottle of R-12 I used was reclaimed and it turned out to be about 1/3 oil. You do not realize until you run out of gas while charging and the container is still heavy. Also never turn the container upside down when charging because you might get a good dose of oil rather that R-12.

One downside -- you might not get an AC technician to work on a duracool converted system.
What oil do you add to a complete rebuilt system when adding duracool and how do you add the oil?

f you are completely rebuilding it you can add it to the oil fill plug in the
ompresser. Just use a small funnel and pour it in.
f everything is already sealed up you can add oil through the low pressure port
ut if you don't already have some in you compressor you will have a problem as
ou don't want to run the compressor empty of oil.
With duracool you can use either mineral oil or ester oil but don't mix them.

I like virgin R12 (NOS) If you got crap like Ken says there is no telling what is in the can. With that big a price difference I would definitely go the Duracool route.
