Picked up a timing set tonight. The gears were steel. I had expected them to be Nylon. Interesting...

Well, the one on the coach was. alum pulley with nylon gear teeth. Chain was like a bracelet. New one is a Cloyes double roller set. All Steel.

"Most" aftermarket timing sets have "steel" spockets for the top and bottom. Supposedly, the OEM as from the factory are quieter but with so many other noises goig on, who would hear some noise from the chain set. I guess Olds(GM) didn't want pedestrians to hear the chain when they walked in front of an OLDS car.
Has anyone run an aftermarket chain set far enough to compare the durability with the stock one? Seems like all OEM brands, Chev, OLDS, Dodge, etc, the OEM ones last approx 100K miles.

The Cloys hi performance chain is about as good as it gets. When I rebuilt my engine the Cloys chain was darn near as tight as it was when it was new.

For our coach's use (generally low mileage) is there any advantage to a double roller Cloyes set vs an all metal standard chain set?

Jim K, what I meant to ask was, does it look like an aftermarket chain set like a Cloyes double roller will go much further than an OEM one with "plastic" teeth on the cam sprocket, or do chain/spocket sets last 100K miles regadrdless of being OEM or the premium after market. I had an SOB fullsize van and at 100K miles the chain/spocket set had enough slack that the chain could have jumped a tooth anytime it felt like it. As my destinations were and still are too far from home to limp home with a sick engine I was glad a very good mechanic friend convinced me to change that chain set before it jumped.
DAVE KING(I'm probably soon going to find out if a 440-3 in an SOB came from the factory with the "silent" chain.)

I hate to think about a cheap chain stretching so I bought the Cloyes for my motor in 1988. When I rebuilt the engine again a year ago the chain was still pretty good. I kept the gears and got just got a new chain from Summit it is good and tight as the gears showed no wear. Some time ago I bought a double roller set from Edlebrock for a 455 olds boat engine, we had a cylinder head problem a year later and while the engine was opened up a check of the year old Edelbrock chain showed it was loose as a goose.
For this reason I only use Cloyes it gives me piece of mind for only a minor amount of hard cash..

I installed the standard Cloyes 3006K. Went in nice an easy. seems to have just the right amount of slack. Getting a replacement cover from Jim K. my cover is way too pitted and corroded for my taste.

Ya talked me into it. Worth it. Without all the stuff in the way, I can see my AC Compressor clutch is crooked. Another project, another day.
