Hello List,

I'm starting to explore the logistics of hosting a rally out here on
Treasure Island (we're in the middle of San Francisco Bay on the old
navy base.) Since the redevelopment hasn't happened yet there is a
surplus of empty parking lots.

I've just sent off a message to the authority that runs the place to see
what it would take to rent one of the lots right around Fleet Week,
which is October 7-11th this year.

I'd like to see how much interest there is to come out here at that time
so that I can get some idea of how much space we'd need to do it. It's
all dry camping but if I can get the space I want, the views will be
fantastic. If I can't get exactly the space I want, they'll just be
really, really good.

This is also a call to the Wagon Master for my area to contact me. Not
sure if 49ers has one or if Western States is the right place to turn.
I haven't gotten around to joining a club yet, but will soon. I just
wanted to get this started earlier rather than later.

Thanks,

Desmond Crisis
Treasure Island, CA

Desmond,
We are to put on a rally in March for the 49ers.
Maybe we can work out something so we can co host it.

My old man was captian of TI fire department back in the 1980s been years since I've seen the place but I might be inclined to make the trip up from LA....

JimK. Of course we can co-host it. I've just got a location and some
connections. Contact me!

Paul, We're halfway across the SF - Oakland Bay Bridge. For those who
haven't been here lately. the access from the east side is much
improved. There's a real on-ramp now instead of the stop sign
intersection. No trouble getting the coach on and off the bridge that
way. The west side on the other hand has a stop sign you need to pull
away from while you merge onto the freeway (...but I have seen youtubes
of GMC's drag racing before!)

Desmond,

totally interested, especially during fleet week. That would be amazing! Keep us updated! I think the rally planners are years out, haha but let's do it!

When they changed that part of the bridge and gave us the "S-Turn" they
added a nice, long on and off ramp. It's a breeze now, at least if
you're coming and going from Oakland. I keep the coach out here and
coming or going is a lot easier than it was before. The only thing I
would say is a concern on the east side off ramp to the island is that
there's still a sharp curve at the end but you have tons of time with
your own lane to slow down. It's really no issue unless you space out
on it and come in hot.

Jim K has set me up with good guidance and contacts. David Greenberg
set me up with a bunch of background material to help me figure it out.
Thanks guys!

If I remember correctly Treasure Island is an island built on the side
of an island (Yerba Buena). The bridge crosses YBI from SF to Oakland. I
left there in November of 1970 (one stop on my Senior Trip sponsored by
Uncle Sam).

That's us!

Home of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, followed by
almost 60 years as Naval Station Treasure Island.

I live out on the Western shore in a place that was probably home to a
Senior Chief with a family.

My GMC lives in the lot that used to be the "Auto Hobby Shop"

The spot I have picked out is right behind the "Great Lawn" and in front
of the bachelor quarters (the star-shaped buildings.)

I noticed the the Vegas Rally was a week later after I put out the
message. I'm still getting plugged in here.

I picked the date because there isn't a better time to be on T.I. The
weather is fantastic in October and the Fleet Week airshow is right on
top of us. I'm not really trying to throw a full-blown rally, but a
more casual get-together might be a nice stop on the trip down the coast
to Vegas.

Desmond,
Most clubs and organizations have their rallys organized one year in
advance. GMCWS is now two years out. Your best bet is to join the
organization of your choice and attend a few rallys. Then decide if
you want to be a rally host. There's more to this than meets the
casual eye of the attendee.

that works, we have done it for years in Orgn. called it the SOOR rally.
SouthernOregOnRally.

No frills, no cost, no ammenities, no affiliations. It was great, and we
will do them again when the situation allows.

they go on all over the nation in back yards, restaurants, etc.

You are offering an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that everyone would want
to be a part of, (and we will;>)

Pick your time, place, and conditions, "build it and they will come" (we
will come, I will come).

we will have a great time

What Gene F. said!!
Make it casual and informal like SOOR.

Count me in and if you need some help; call on me. I don't know what is involved or what I can do but I'm available to help.

I spent a week on TI in June of 1963 as a guest of the USMC.
Looking forward to seeing it again.
