I paid a bunch of money for Aeroquip fittings and hose for the power steering on my corvette. thought I was at least putting in good hose.

Well this spring it sprung a leak, the hose had failed it was falling apart from the power steering fluid

I guess I won't be putting any of that in my GMC!

The braided hose is very pretty, but also has it's limitations. Did the hose actually fail or did it spring a leak at the fitting? They can be rather fussy to assemble correctly. I have a Porsche that we plumbed with a front oil cooler, and the hose and fittings really did cost an arm and a leg. You generally can reuse the hose ends, and simply replace the hose, but I'd be sure that the hose is compatable with power steering fluid before proceeding any further.

I've generally had good service from Pegasus Racing in Wisconsin if you need a source.

Kieth,

Did your hose have a teflon liner? Some stainless braid hose has a black rubber like liner that doesn't last a long time. For best price on stainless hose and fittings go to www.siliconeintakes.com

Keith,

That is very strange, stainless steel Teflon lined braided hose is used on
every aircraft for the high pressure hydraulic systems.

The fluid is Skydrol.

http://www.skydrol.com/pages/faqs.asp

Where did you buy the hoses?

Were they Teflon lined?

Keith,
Somebody got Something Wrong.
Speed shop guys are great at bench racing and everything else is a toss-up. Many have little interest in longevity and great interest in first cost. (This is a very poor match for us.) They probably sold you what they had in stock. No bets it was the best choice, but it was on the shelf.

Get a hold of the Aeroquip catalogues and read them carefully.
They have long lists of hoses and material compatibility.
In durability testing, that sort of stuff is the only thing that gets used and a leak costs about 120$us/hr in down time.

Keith,

How are the fittings attached to the ends of the hose? If they are swaged on
the whole hose is junk. If they are an assembly that can be taken apart you
could take it back to the speed shop tell them to disassemble it, credit you
for the hose and then take the fittings to a shop that makes up hydraulic
hoses and see if they can put the fittings on some braided stainless steel
hose that is Teflon lined.
