I'd bet this is normal, but my Onan Stinks. I don't know if it is running rich, but it sure smells like it. It runs great, under full load or not. Jerry's got this thing setup so nice that I hate to tweak anything.
If I had an awning, I would probably suffocate.
Time for a Venturi.

Chris,
Old cold flatheads (like the Onan) were notorious for aldehyde emissions (an artifact of P-poor combustion processes). Stink and make your eyes water.
These old engines will run WAY RICH, but not much lean. They do stink when they are rich.
First, try tweaking the main jet in the carburetor (the one in the bottom). An eighth of a turn may be too much. Put on all the load you can manage and then lean it out until it starts to sag.
If that does not make a mountain of difference, think about the de-carbon job. If it has been run rich, it may need it real bad.
A stack isn't a bad idea, if you can figure out how to carry it.
