I used a different solution on my 78 Royale. I replaced the 16.5" steel
wheels with 16" steel wheels from Chev & Gmc 1 Ton FRONT wheels. Up to 1999
or 2000 (before metric) They are hub centered, but with the front brake
calipers that I run on my coach, there was an interference problem. How I
solved this was to machine some aluminum wheel spacers that were the same
thickness as the extended part of the front hub. I pressed out the original
wheel studs and replaced them with 1/2" longer studs. I then machined a
piece of stainless steel equal in thickness to the wheel with the Outside
diameter about .002" smaller than the wheel Inside diameter. these stainless
pieces are attatched to the hub with Flathead screws with allen sockets. I
now have hub centered 16" steel wheels again. I had a very difficult time
getting the wheels to run true without the hub extensions. She runs 75 mph
now with no wheel shake. With sand blasting, powder coating, long studs,
spacers etc., I still am into it for less money than the Alcoas. But this
won't be everyone's cup of tea but it works for me. Jim Hupy

I'll take some w/digital camera and send them to you off net because
attatchments don't seem to work consistently. Might be a couple of days. Jim

No, I will look into to doing that, I'm new to the GMCNet, basically since
Auburn, but with I guess I will have to become more computer literate as it
relates to attatchments and photo sharing.

James,

It took me a year to figure out how to post on the photo site. I still don't have it right, as I have not sorted my photos into albums. I'll have to work on that next. It's really pretty easy. Just get someone to show you how to do an attachment and you're there.

I do have further info about the wheels I used though. The later wheels (not
the ones I used) have countersinking on the lug stud holes and are intended
for use with lug nuts that have a bevel that matches the countersink on the
wheel which aligns and somewhat centers the wheel on the centerline of the
stud base circle. Whether the hub center and the stud base circle are
concentric in all MH applications is anyones guess, but being a person who
measures to be sure before he assumes this, I would bet not in all. I have
seen aftermarket aluminum wheels that use this same system. With many
manufacturers of front hubs both foreign and domestic and various dimensions
of hub flanges, wheel manufacturers have gone to a larger Inside diameter to
overcome these differences and have come up with the tapered lug studs to
compensate. The tapered lug nuts that I have encountered do not have a very
large clamping flange compared to the stock GMC MH lug nuts. I don't know if
these tapers contribute to aluminum wheel crack failures, but I wouldn't be
surprised if this happened if the tapers remained tight after the small
clamping flange reached intimate contact with the wheel. On another note, I
have a long time friend (50 years and counting) whom I have purchased tires
and wheels from over the years who has a Tire Store. He looked through a
considerable stack of wheels for me before we came up with 7 similar wheels
that were designed for use with radial tires (they are stamped with the word
radial on the inside of the wheel next to the weld seam). Not everyone has
the same access to a supply as I do here in Salem, OR. That's why I said
this might not work for everyone. The wheels that I used are hub centered
and the lug stud holes are straight through bores, not countersunk. I hope
this clarifies the application somewhat.

Regarding Rims -
FYI - I have 6 Alcoa Rims for sale (used) & have listed them on the Swap meet.

These rims are P/n 160231 and were manufactured 10/2003 Included with the rims are the center caps, lug nuts, and lug caps. All rims have decent tires mounted on them.

I am located in west central Indiana.
