Ray Erspamer came out today with his bearing tool to take my front hubs apart. It was a learning day as he has zerks on his GMC so he has never had to use his tool.

After getting the bearing cleaned up and reading the markings here is what I have:

LH outer bearing Bower Japan LO 104949E
LH outer race Timken USA LM104911 "6478"
LH inner bearing Timken USA LM104949E SY "6478-A"
LH inner race Timken USA LM104911 VY "6478-A"
LH spacer LM104911 ".006 6478"

RH outer bearing Timken USA LM104949E SY "6437-A"
RH outer race Timken USA LM104911 VY "6437-A
RH inner bearing Timken USA LM104949E SY "6437"
RH inner race Timken USA LM104911 VY "6437"
RH spacer ".006 6437"

(the numbers in "quotes" are hand etched)

The bearings and races pressed off with the expected force, good interference fits. No signs of wear, overheating, or damage on bearings, races, hubs or knuckles.

I have two concerns. The LH outer bearing does not appear to be part of the "6478" set. I'm not sure how the ".006" marked on the spacers relates to the .095 dimension I have seen referenced for these bearing sets.

Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

I would not go back with the left hand mismatched bearing.
I would go to Autozone and order a set 23 Timken and
replace it.
As for the right bearing I think the concess is any spacing
of .006 to .009 is acceptable. I would place the bearing
set in a vise and check the spacing. If it checks within the
.006 to .009 range and does not have any scratches or
gaulding, I would use it.

Steve,

So it was the blind leading the blind eh? ;-) Not such a tough job after all
was it?

Maybe someone swapped a Bower bearing for the Timken in the LH outer
bearing?

I seem to remember someone posting that the bearings for a Toronado were
clearanced at 0.0060 and the bearings for a GMC were clearanced at 0.0095.
Keep in mind that I suffer from CRS and CRAFT!

I am happy to hear that everything "looks" OK, now all you have to do is
measure everything and make sure it's all within tolerance.

As far as the bearings go I would buy a new set and save the used ones for
spares. I would also get new inner and outer seals. Once you get the zerks
installed there's no reason to disassemble it ever again!

the Thoma video should give you some info on how the clearance is tested

http://gmcwsproducts.blogspot.com/2006/06/ken-thoma-video.html

Or you can buy a new set of bearings that have been prep-ed for the "Zerk"
and have the new seals...

good luck

Steve,

IMHO, you've been very lucky that those bearings have not failed; they were
very ineptly installed according to all I've read, heard, and experienced
over the past 12 years. To have mixed the components of different bearing
sets in that manner is unconscionable.

No doubt in my mind whatsoever that I'd install new Timken A23 sets, making
sure the spacers were engraved "0.0095". Any other choice is, IMHO, "penny
wise and pound foolish".

And don't forget that there are correct and incorrect inner seals being
marketed -- you've probably seen Larry Weidner's recent posting with photos;
if not, we'll find it.

Just get the correct bearings & seals from Dave Lenzi.

It was definitely the blind leading the blind, but we had a great fun time. Once we figured out that my Warner bearing tool was missing some key parts we started to understand things much better. I am definitely going to get the missing parts fab'd so I have the complete set, then I'm going to watch the Ken Toma video and make some modifications to my bearing tool so we can use air tools vs brute force with hand wrenches and a lot of grunting.

Steve, I would definitely replace that mismatched bearing set.

I can sell you the triangle piece, but I only have one of the screws. What
would you be willing to pay for the plate? I can send it in the mail for
about $5.00.

Ray,
The triangle plate can use the same screw the rest of the unit uses.
If you do modify the Warner tool to use an impact be extra sure to
grease the screw heavily. The screw with the Warner tool is only about a
grade 5 and is subject to galling when impacted.

In looking at this KIT picture, I'm missing LOTS of parts ! Lucky I work at a manufacturing company and have access to getting some of this made.

Gary, I have no idea what it's worth, just shoot me a price. I had planned on just making one, but this would be much easier.

I can sell you the triangle piece, but I only have one of the screws. What
would you be willing to pay for the plate? I can send it in the mail for
about $5.00.

I have some extra parts in my Warner bearing tool set. One of the extras is
the triangle plate with the holes in the corners. Would this be something

It was definitely the blind leading the blind, but we had a great fun time.
Once we figured out that my Warner bearing tool was missing some key parts
we started to understand things much better. I am definitely going to get
the missing parts fab'd so I have the complete set, then I'm going to watch
the Ken Toma video and make some modifications to my bearing tool so we can
use air tools vs brute force with hand wrenches and a lot of grunting.

Steve, I would definitely replace that mismatched bearing set.

Gary / Ray,

I just bought two of them from Terry Skinner for $20.

One for my bearing puller in the USA and one for John Sharpe's.

You need to start with a known quantity and buy new seals and bearings. Front wheel bearings are definitly not a place to go cheap. Have you priced a towing and ruined knuckles lately?

HI Steve

When the hubs and knuckles are manufactured there is a plus and minus tolerance. So some combinations are looser than others.
The .006 clearance will work fine in some but be too tight in others. If you were to have a hub which is at the large end of the tolerance and a knuckle that is on the small side of the tolerance a .006 can be way too tight and can overheat and destroy the bearing and then the hub and knuckle.

GM and Timken recognized this back when they were still building the coaches and GM specified that .095 clearance bearing set be used.
For a long while Timken had the .006 for automobiles and .095 for the GMC motorhomes. Then they went to .095 for everything. A bearing that is a little loose will not ruin the bearings or hubs and knuckles.

I would suggest that you order a new Timken Set 23. Jim Kanomata, Jim Bounds, Jeff Sirum and others sell them. You can also get them from auto parts stores.

Look for the .095 etched into the spacer and you will know they will work well in your GMC.

Are there numbers listed anywhere for the various parts houses for the
