Main question is what do you think is actually cheaper? what do you guys/Gals think?
Carbon Footprint's Story: 1977 26 Ft GMC built Kingsley rear twins and Dry side Bath with a 455.
Craigslist AD:26 ft 1977 GMC "moterhome" been sitting for 6 years. Rough running coach, many upgrades, good interior, some tlc needed. Asking $5,000 OBO(upgrades were the oak interior,new dashboard,2 full lenghth zip-dee's,new van style windows, slimline roof A/C,newer norcold fridge, headers, older custom paintjob, Alum ladder and rails)
Negotiated and paid $3,000
2 months of storage and getting it roadworthy (Battery,2 tires,fix water/oil leaks, new master cyl and brake springs)for the 300 mile trek home- $1,200
Got it home and THEN realized how much Cash I needed.... researched a new motor after 2 months of research and pondering....actually decided to sell the project and we put it for sale on craigslist.
Had a change of heart...Weather got nice and I REALLY wanted to take it camping... Called Jim K at Applied GMC and ordered a new motor.- $3,200 (Great deal! and a GREAT motor I hear)
If we had let a shop do the engine Add at least $3500
2 weeks installing in the driveway after work.- $-Caffiene
Misc. items you replace when replacing a motor (new oil cooler,flush/rod radiator,fluids belts bolts,sealant ect..)-$1,000
Used Intake- $250
Old Carb was shot... no core...$800
Runs Great! time for a test drive...uh-oh smoking brakes...gotta fix em...$700 (Jim K parts/Les Schwabb labor)
Runs Great! Uh-Oh rear tires are 11 years old...uh oh 16.5's are becoming Extinct! Time for Alcoa's and 6 BFG Commercial T/A's- $2400
Replaced Leaking Fan-Tastic - $300
new 6volt Batteries- $200
Bedding- $50
Epoxy paint for bathroom and shower- $150
Total SO FAR with a few projects on the Horizon- $13,250
Could I have done better? This is more for giving advice for potential owners to ponder... not to digress my decision. I actually would not change a thing because I LOVED working on this old Motorhome it was actually a FUN pastime!

I'd kind of in the same ballpark, but have spent more. The nice thing with this process is that you know exactly what you have when you're done. The awnings, redone dash, and paint are all things that are on my 'to do someday' list. I know of one fellow that had a nice coach, but that was after spending $30,000 at Cinnebar, so I think you're way ahead of the game at this point.

You are doing fine. I had the exact numbers Denny Allen has quoted. Our coach cost 9K and we have about 11K more in it. Our first coach cost 15K and we had about 5K more in it. But the good thing is, when _you_ put the money and parts in it, you know exactly what went in. Our new coach has a great engine. It had 12K on it when we got it and 20K now. But I call it a plain vanilla engine. It was a rebuilt 455. I have no idea how much care went into the rebuild other than it has good compression, doesn't use oil and runs well.

Hey people, let's put this spending money thing into perspective. What does
a new 4 x 4 Ford F350 Diesel PU list for? $45,000.00 and change and it is
still a damn pickup, it don't have a shower or a toilet, it's a whole lot
harder to get into. If you sleep in it and it rains, you are going to get
wet.( oh I forget, GMC's leak also) but not to pick on ford only, similar GM
and Chrysler Products are priced similarly. Steve F and I were talking about
Drag racing & he related to me about the difference between his Tri-5 Chev
and a 9 second VW. He said when the race was over, He had a classic 55 chev
but the other car was still a d*&n VW. I guess you could have a new lexus
that talks to you when there are service related issues or you haven't
remembered to hook up your seat belt. Price one of those, then look at what
you have invested in your GMC. Looks like a hell of a bargain to me. Jim

Or better yet open up the FMCA magazine and look at the bargins you see there, if I shipped my GMC to Jim, spent $50,000 I'd have a far nicer coach and it would be perfect, and cheaper.
And I'm talking the little RVs, not the $250,000 rolling houses.
