While trolling the roads near Noxen PA I spotted hidden in a tree linked driveway a 1978 GMC Avion.

The coach is 100% original with no modifications at all.

To say the coaches interior is pristine is an understatement!

I did not ask if the coach was for sale but I assume it could be had.

This was the first time I saw a GMC with two rear twin beds with two bunk beds overhead. Six friendly people could easily sleep in it!

Will pass on the information to the registry.

Pictures will follow in a few days.

After getting bit by a cat and spending a week in the hospital afraid of losing my only hand; we are healed and snug as a bug in our farm with the SOB parked down on the corner of our property.

Last week I fell down a flight of stairs but was only sore for two days and nothing was broken.

I have been told not to buy any green bananas!

If it is a 1978 GMC Avion it would be unique. Avion were made in 1975
only, must be another model.

Well - it says right on it "Interior By Avion". Will have pictures shortly.

I also find thousands of references to "1978 GMC Avion" using a Google search.

TZE number says it is a 78.

????

Beats me.

There was a 78 in Tucson that was claimed to be an Avion, Interior didn't look like any of the other models. Rear twin with pass side toilet, 26 foot.

Hal Kading Las Cruces NM

PS. But Rob, It's a 78! And Triple Trouble sounds so cool.

Hal,

The dead giveaway is the curved bathroom wall next to the stove across from
the entry door.

If I ever find a '23 Avion I will buy and name it Triple Trouble.

The reason being I think Steve Ferguson and I would have BIG BATTLE to see
who wound up with it! ;-)

Guess I'm spending too much time down here in the valley. I'll have to get up there on the mountain and check thigs out but you'll have to give me a hint. I do know where there is another one with rear twins with bunk beds above. (77 Royale with a 403 and it's for sale)

Not surprising to find lots of hits, Avion produced an interesting class C on a GMC chassis. Here is a sample: <http://www.tincantourists.com/classified/showproduct.php?product=2684>

I would not RULE OUT that it IS a 1978 GMC (TZE) Avion (they sold a lot of transmodes) but I would be SKEPTICAL until proven.

G'day,

The many emails about this "1978" Avion piqued my interest and I've done
some digging.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f417/avion-trailers-44325-3.html

The article above noted the following:

In 1970, controlling interest in the Avion Coach Corporation was sold by the
Cayo family to a Detroit family headed by Robert M. Ligon. Legan
Enterprises, who continued to build and market the same high quality product
with Robert Legan as its president. In 1976 Legan Enterprises sold the
company to Fleetwood Enterprises. The Silver Avion was built until the
1990's when Fleetwood decided to build the Avion Product with more
traditional RV construction methods.

http://www.rv.net/forum/Index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/15366614/gotomsg/153
72615.cfm

The article above noted the following:

In 1976, Legan Enterprises sold the Avion Coach Corporation to Fleetwood
Enterprises, Inc. of Riverside, CA, the world's largest builder of
recreational vehicles, whose experience in the manufacture of RV's dates
back to 1951.

The link below will take you to a listing of Avion Models.

http://my.execpc.com/~drg/avionrem.html#Models

Scroll down to 1975 and you will find:

1975 All American 24', Travelcader: 26',28',31', LaGrande: 26',28',31'-22-MH
1975 Avion GMC 23' and 26' Motorhomes GMC Avion (Both TT and MH interiors)
1975 Avion Class A 38' Aluminium bodied Motorhome.

Scroll down to 1976 and note that the Avion GMC 23' and 26' are not listed.

Keep scrolling and when you get to 1977 there is a link:

1977 Travelcader: 26', 28', 31'.LaGrande: 26', 28', 31'- 22-MH
1977 1977 MH22

Clicking on the 1977 MH22 link will take you to this:

http://www.gradeless.com/avion/1977/MH77.pdf

As you can see it is not one of our GMC's.

However, the cabinetry has the same trim as mine!

Scroll to 1978 and there is 22-MH

Scroll to 1979 and there is 22-MH

Scroll to 1980 it's gone.

IMHO it is safe to say that Avions built on GMC Transmodes were only built
in 1975.

Mr Greenberg just emailed me and confirmed it is a 1975 not a 1978.

The owner is quite elderly and is going to be surprised when he learns it is older that he thought it was.

I would love to own this coach!

While working on a leak in my 1976 Eleganza II, I noticed Avion is written on the bottom side of my countertop. If Avions were only made in 1975, could my countertop be a left over part?
