For those of you wanting a GPS for your GMC but haven't wanted to pay a lot --
here is one for $39.99 at Geeks.com that is an off brand and is a reconditioned one but really looks good.

http://www.geeks.com/sales.asp?cm_mmc=geekmail-_-daily_html-_-31may10_memday2010-_-memday2010Main

All fhe map systems for every brand actually come from only two companies (maybe 3) so it should give you the same streets, etc. as Tom Tom or Garmin.

Maps may be the same, but my experience is the routing algorithms are not.
My Garmin 2730 usually takes me by a route that I would go if I used a road map or a known area to me. Also if I go off its preferred route, going home it tends to take me back the way I came even if I took some different roads along the way.
My Garmin C550 (about 1/2 the price) is dumb as a stick! It doesn't give many routing options and usually wants to take me the least desirable way. Paula used it for a meeting in Hamilton just off the 403. She knew how to get there but not how to get back on the 403 to get home so she let it take her... well thing took her through downtown Hamilton at 5pm to get to a much longer route via Hwy 6 and the 401. It doesn't even make a good paperweight.

Just my observations.

Check your settings on each unit.
Make sure that you have them the same.
As you probably already know, you can set for the shortest route and also for the fastest route.
If they are set differently on each unit that could explain your problem.

Not only that fellows; but, you can usually buy a refurbished tom- tom or garmin from geeks, newegg or tiger direct ever so often cheaper than you can update your off brand. You don't even need to think about how I learned that.

When my Garmin was in need of a map update I saw Tiger Direct had a refurbished one cheaper then the update I needed. I called Tiger Direct and was told they didn't know if the refurbished one had the update. I then called Garmin and asked them. There answer was that they didn't know which ones had the update but didn't think most refurbished ones did. I waited a while and bought a new one on sale for a few dollars more..

Yeah, all well and good, but then you have to also have the almanac, HO214 (for the current lat) a rated chronometer, and it only works on for a clear twilight and is a bear to do underway in a coach.

About 4 years ago I bought the top of the line Lowrance. Loved it. Does everything. Started having trouble with it this last Fall. Grabbed a 100 dollar Tom Tom. Sorriest thing I ever messed with. I guess the Lowrance had me spoiled. So, I found a newer used Lowrance and grabbed it. Now life is good again. 50 bux well spent.

Thanks for the lead Emery.  I ordered one and they threw in a clear conscience for a few dollars more - they added sales tax.  Shipping rate was reasonable.  Any hints on how to get permission from the boss after the fact?

G day,

"Any hints on how to get permission from the boss after the fact?"

Douglas, you could always give it to the "boss"as a gift, You would probably soon get it back.
