I need to replace my harmonic balancer, Does anyone have any first
hand knowledge of this task?
Is it as simple as taking off the belts pulling it out.... or do i
have to remove the fan/ radiator?
also, is it ok just to pick up the part from napa.. or what ever local
parts store has it.. or should i purchase a more specific one online?

any and all input would be greatly appreciated! i have the ability..
not the knowledge.. (dangerous combo)

Hope everyone has a safe Holiday weekend.

Dave, I had to replace one a couple of years ago while at the International convention in Iowa. Jim K. had me order one from the local Autozone. Wally and I replaced it. Not much to it but I have the two piece fan shroud so that made things easy to get to. Snatched the belts, and swapped it out. Took maybe 30 minutes.

Dave,

I replaced mine when I did the timing chain. My HB was leaking do to a grove worn by the shaft seal. This is very common. I purchased mine at NAPA for around $80. Attached are some photos I took during the timing chain R/R. This can give you an idea what has to be done to gain access to the balncer. For sure you won't have to go as far as I needed to go but you can get the idea.

I replaced mine last month with this unit: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PFS-80022/. It has white timing marks from 0 to 60 degrees BTDC, plus an additional mark every 90 degrees. It didn't cost much more than the basic OEM types available at the auto parts stores.
A harmonic damper puller is required to remove the old damper. Further, I recommend using a damper installation tool to install the new damper. It's a tight fit and the damper can be damaged if one beats on it to install it on the crankshaft.

I received my harmonic balancer (none in north east Oklahoma) I swung
by the gmc and was curious what size is the big bolt in the HB see pic
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=29192&title=timing-chain-r-2fr&cat=5172
I had a standard set of sockets, 3/4 the largest did not come close. I
will have to buy a socket, If someone knows the size, it would save
me a trip.
thanks,

The bolt head takes a 1 1/8" socket this would be a good time to invest in a 1/2" drive set of sockets even a harbor freight set should be ok as you probibly won't be using it every day.

Also, the bolt is torqued to 160 ft lbs, so you'll need a fair amount of leverage to break it loose.

Get the 3/4" drive set from HF then you will also have the 1-1/2" socket you need for the front axle nut and handles that are long enough and strong enough to take the forces needed to break these items loose.

G'day,

I agree with Steve with a comment; I'd get the set with the 18 inch "T" bar
as apposed to the set with the 24 inch breaker bar. I'll be dollars to
donuts the bar and slider of "T" bar will take more torque than the pin in
the head of the breaker bar.
