G’day,
I’m getting stuff together to bring with me to the USA for this summers
tour. One of the items I bring is my Garmin GPS. I got an ad from Camping
World for the Garmin Nuvi 1200 GPS for $94.49. Does anyone have one of these
and if yes what do you think of it. I'd just as soon have one less thing to
schlep back and forth from the USA.

I don't have any personal experience with this particular unit, but Am happy with my old Nuvi 350. I looked this one up on the Garmin website:

It looks like a good, basic unit. Of course, today's basic units do more than my older mid-line unit. If it looks like it will suit your needs, you can hardly go wrong on the price.

I've found that using my old 3.5 inch GPS in the giant (compared to the car) GMC is quite a long reach towards a very small target. I noticed recently that our local CostCo has a nice seven inch touchscreen Magellan unit that is marketed specifically for RVs. It is also sold on-line:

These CostCo Magellan units were recently on discount for $179 in-store, but it looks like they've risen to $199 (before the discount, around November last, they were $229). Probably someone on the list that you can conveniently meet up with has a CostCo card if you're interested.

Years ago I started with a Garmin GPS III Plus. Tiny black and white screen, heavy and bulky but state of the art for its day, over 400 bucks. I recently moved up to a Garmin 255 4 inch screen color, traffic, pretty nice.
Now . . . my last trip a few weeks ago down to Assateague I also had my iPhone. Let me tell ya. That iPhone map was so far superior to the Garmin device, with respect to ease of looking at it, detail, blinking blue indicator for your position, and most of all the finger squeeze action to zoom the map . . . I can see how the iPad will be even magnitudes better.
And one last comment. The female voice for directions that comes with the Garmin is pleasant despite the fact that perhaps one in twenty times it would give me bad advice . . . when I discovered that Snoop Dog is selling his voice over on Tom Tom devices, if I had to buy another GPS I would have to have Snoop Dog giving me the directions.

Rob,
If your cell phone internet is the same "3G" as here in the States then you should be good to go. I think it is, but don't take my word for it. The 3G iPad has the GPS chip in it, and the WiFi does not. I believe that the GPS in cell phones and the iPad are not as robust as a dedicated GPS, but it's close enough for me!
The Apple stores here are back ordered, probably to supply y'all down-under. By the way it's a great book reader. I've downloaded a ton of free books from Project Gutenberg <www.gutenberg.org> and even a few audio books. It's a pain to get them into iTunes, and then into the iPad, but it's doable and once you get past the learning curve it seem "trivially simple" as one of our most revered would say ;~).
You know it just now dawns on me that I need to copy over my GMC manual PDF's. There are apps that will convert a PDF to an epub format so that I can easily read it in the iBook reader. To have those with me anywhere would be a great treat. I could read the manual while on the train!!! Including the epub format might be a good idea for Bill Massey.
I have not yet bought the turn-by-turn app for the GPS, but it's just a matter of time before I do.
All in all I think the iPad is great.

IIRC, GPS on iPad and all other cellphone devices are not "true" GPS, in that they don't use the GPS satellites for position, but instead use triangulation from cell phone tower signals, so they don't work if the cell tower is down or you're out of cell range. Tom Tom, Garmin, etc are true GPS and use the satellite signals. FWIW.

NOT TRUE!
Check the Internet.
The Apple iPhone has true GPS. It can also triangulate from wireless
and cell phone towers.
When the first model came out it did not have true GPS but later
models do
