The coach was ressurected from a backyard... Last registered in 1994. The Coach is an early 1977 with a 455. The engine and Carburetor are both fresh with about 400 highway miles. I have 6 1/2 hours before the appointment to look for problems and make any adjustments. I searched the history and found many successful SMOG stories but no tips on things to check prior.
Thanks GMCnet!

Yes it is a JimK motor but they are not a SMOG testing station.

Were not a smog station for the state of CA.
We have machines that sample and gives us good indication as to if it will pass.
Suggestion: for idle, set rpm at 850pm at neutral. Set timing on mark
or 2 degrees less.
Should it fail, send me copy and I will review and tell you what we
need to do to pass, if all trys fail, Bring it down and I will work on
it .

I googled "SMOG Check Tips" and came up with many "tips." Many will not apply to your GMC, but others will.

Tips like: Run it on the highway and get it hot just before going in for the test. Make sure your oil is clean and at the proper level. (That -might- be a quart low on the dip stick.) They also say something about a pre-test that might be a good idea. Many other seeming good ideas... google it!

The one idea that really works in California, buy an older coach! Twisted Evil

thats why I bought a 73. didnt wanna deal with that BS. My turboed mustang has to see a friend of a friend who will ignore the mods for $140 and pass it. dont wanna have to do that with the coach.

the sad part is my stang will pass the test part, just not the visual (No CARB EO bull$hit) he just puts it on the rollers and it passes! in a common sense state, the numbers out of the tail pipe would be all that mattered, but not in the granola state...

One netter from CA failed, someone sugested he drive it and refill with new gas. Had 6month or older fuel. Passed after new gas. We don,t have to test in the county i live in but one county to the east does. The state of Misery {oops, spelled missouri} is strange.,,PL

What is SMOG???

I got the idea it has something to do with the People's Republic of Kalifornia.

I hope it is not contagious.

Oregon Is just as strange. Around Portland all '75 and newer vehicles need emissions check. (The year doesn't change year to year... just like California.) Around one of the southern Oregon cities, they require emissions up to 20 model years old. (ie: The year changes each year.) Elsewhere in Oregon, no emissions is required.

But if you have collector plates, no emissions is required regardless of the vehicles age or location.

Strange.

Ken B,
This smog is contagious. It wont be long before you'll be needing to
have it tested there in Indiana.

My coach passes AZ test every year:

Bring it in Hot.
Remove the air filter (Breathes better).
Up the idle to 850-900.

The Idle is where you are more likely to fail. hence the higher idle RPM. On the Dyno, numbers are really good.

I read someone here say they stuck the sensor in the ONAN tailpipe!!!!
