This is our trip to the GMC Western States roundup in Auburn.
We had planned to caravan with another 49er GMCer so leaving on time
was important.
Wednesday morning, I drove down the hill a little early, stopped at
the gas station and filled up with diesel, It took almost 14 gallons.
I then called Gene to let him know we were on our way. He reminded me
to call him again when we got to the bottom of the Sunol grade.
Motorhome was doing great, crested the grade at 45mph, when I got to
the bottom, I called Gene.
Already? Was his reply when I said we’re at the bottom of the grade.
He was to get on the freeway a couple of miles ahead of me. He called
back to let me know he was on the freeway and to change the CB to
channel 13. We drove mostly just under 65mph. The route was to take
680 to 80 to exit 119A.
Somewhere close to Sacramento, we noticed a GMC up ahead, and we
decided to pass him up. It turns out it was another 49er GMCer and
once he recognized us, he followed us the 30 plus miles to the
destination.
Gene’s gps got us through town and side street to the fairground entrance.
I parked next to Gene on vendor row and Bill Hubler parked next to me.
He was so happy that someone else had a diesel so we are now an elite group.
Sunday after we finished dinner, we let the rally and headed home.
Most people were still eating when we sneaked out.
Rout home was the reverse, I80 to 680. Drove mostly at 65 and crested
the Sunol grade at 32 in second gear. Almost made it up my hill to
within my property.
I have a few more readings to share with the diesel group for help
with improvement.

I have a Suburban furnace. It looks as if it's been in the coach at least
20 years.

We live in SoCal, so don't really use it that often. But when we did,
it always worked great.

It's developed a new "issue".

When it starts up for the first time as the evening cools, it starts up with
a shrieking-squeal, almost as if it had a lose belt, but more metallic.

After about a minute the squealing stops, and with each successive start-up
during the night, the squealing does not recur.

My inclination is to remove the furnace and take it to a Suburban service
center.

Any other options would be appreciated.

Fin,

Sounds like the bearings / bushings on the fan shaft is squealing.

Here's a link to the index of manuals Bdub has on his website, scroll down
to Suburban and hopefully yours will be there.

http://www.bdub.net/manuals/index.html

Maybe there'll be some troubleshooting steps to follow.

Sir: Bdub has some Suburban manuals
http://www.bdub.net/manuals/index.html
I think on some GMC models there is a booster fan in the ductwork under the Stove. It could be a bearing there. I have also heard of gas jets "whistleing" upon initial firing till it warmed up. An adjust is suppose to remidy this?

Yes, mis-adjusted air screw can cause squealing. Depending on the age of the furnace the slits in the burner might be partially clogged by rust.

The pictures on the photo site and manuals on bdub's site would be a good starting place.

This is our trip to the GMC 49ers September rally at Sady Cove Oregon.
We left our home in San Jose Thursday morning at 5am,
stopped at the gas station and filled the fuel tank with diesel,
By the time we left the gas station was 5:30am.
We drove to Pleasanton to meet up with another coach.
We had planned on meeting at the Stoneridge JC Penney parking lot at 6:30
but we got the at 6:10 and they weren’t there yet so we waited.
We actually left there at 6:30 as planned.
We drove up 680 freeway north to I80 east for 13 miles to the 505 cutoff for
33 miles north east to highway 5 north till Medford in Oregon.
Drove another 18 miles on county road to Shady Cove.
Our friends were towing the VW Thing so we stayed at 60 miles an hour.
We stopped a couple of times at rest stops (seems all the rest stops
were open in northern California),
they stopped for gas but we kept going. We stopped in Yreka for lunch
at the Wal Mart parking lot.
Did a little touring of Medford, then proceeded to Shady Cove.
We were a day early but the campground accommodated both of us by
staying next to each other for the entire time.
The co-hosts were already there. That evening we had some spirits and
played card games.
Friday, the rest of the group showed up. In the afternoon, we were
tralley’ed to the host’s home nearby for a great happy hour and
dinner.
Saturday, breakfast in the Pavilion at the RV park. In the afternoon,
we were bused to Grants Pass for a Dinner Excursion, 4-hour, 36 mile
round trip thru Hellgate Canyon, then back up river to the OK Corral,
an old homestead, for a country banquet. The ribs were awesome.
Sunday morning breakfast at the Madrone restaurant next door to the campground.
After breakfast we say our goodbyes and left.
We stopped in Orland for an early dinner. We got there at 2:30pm and
left at 5:00pm. We knew the owners and visited with them before
eating.
That was the only stop we made before getting home.
Now for stats
Total miles for this trip were 837
Engine : 3.9 Cummings Intercooled Turbo Diesel
EGT 650 at 60-65 miles per hour. Got up to 850 on long pulls.
Boost, line came off on Sunol grade so no readings. It’s a 1/8” line
to the gauge. The fitting at the air intake is 3/16” so a pieve a
piece of vacuum hose to connect the two together. I used tyraps to
hold the 1/8 line inside the hose but its not working. Maybe someone
will come up with a better setup. I’m open for suggestions.
Engine temp under 200 all the way to Oregon. On the way back in
California from Redding to Vacaville with 95-99 weather, the temp was
210-220.
Tranny temp, 160, got to 180 on the long pulls, then back down right away.
Final drive temp, 150-170.

Going over the Siskiyou mountains, I had to douwnshift into second on
those long up grades.
The hardest pulls were coming from Oregon after Ashland.
On my next trip. I’ll fill up and figure the MPG for this trip.

Wow - wait a minute - 837 miles on one fill-up so far?

Can these Diesel's be had from a boneyard?

Wait a minute - I'm having trouble putting the shower head back on, maybe a diesel conversion would be a bit too much for me...

Manny,
That EGT is great. You could easily go with more boost from the
sounds of it. What is your boost at 650 deg EGT?
