The GMCnet guidelines are posted at:
http://www.gmcnet.org/gmcnetguidelines.html
I've seen quite a few messages lately that either were over the 15kb limit
or had binary attachments(photos) - those with attachments also happen to
be way over the 15kb limit. It appears many subscribers don't really
understand how this list works or why it's set up the way it is.
Some background. The list basically has three different formats served by
two different machines. The email side is comprised of "real-time"(or
"reflector") and "digest" subscribers. In addition, there is a separate
system that houses the GMC Forum, which mirrors the email list and allows
web access. "Real-time" subscribers get a copy of every email as soon as
it hits the server. Digest subscribers get a compilation of emails once
or twice a day. This compilation is basically all the emails end-to-end
in a long text document - keep that point in mind.
GMCnet is a plain text medium exclusively. Non-plain text email formats
still rely on the ascii format, but manage their formatting by adding
large numbers of additional characters to instruct the recipient machine
how to display the content. In the case of MS "Rich Text"(Outlook's
default format), this results in emails that are more than twice as large
as a plain text version. Since the digest is plain text exclusively, all
that formatting chaff would show up in the digest if allowed. By the same
token, pictures and other binary attachments are also encoded in ascii
text. The average short plain text email is about 4kb. Just imagine 60kb
of pure gibberish in plain text. Another issue is the bandwidth consumed.
Instead of a 4kb email sent to 300 recipients, it's now a 64kb email to
300 recipients.
The 15kb limit is mainly there to reduce the amount of quoted text. Very
rarely will an original message exceed the limit - I usually approve those
with the knowledge that resulting replies will likely bounce. BTW,
quoting the entire digest in a reply will exceed the limit every time...
This brings us to the subject of "trimming quotes". The majority of email
programs will "quote" the original email when replying. There are many
formats, but the most common is a special character(often ">") inserted at
the beginning of each line or original text. When replying to an email,
it's considered proper netiquette to trim extraneous quoted material. For
example, if I were to post the text of the Gettysburg address and you
wanted to elaborate on "our forefathers", then you would delete all but
that passage from the reply.
It only takes a minute to trim your quotes and those trying to read your
comments will greatly appreciate it.
Patrick

You can type all you want. What is happening lately is that folks are not trimming the quotes. They should not quote an entire message. Some are quoting several messages. I have been noticing this lately myself. I just use the forum and try to keep my quotes trimmed or not use them at all. Just something folks need to get used to doing. And, don't send pictures.

Here is an example:
Someone wrote an interesting trip report recently. It was 39K long,
thankfully Patrick allowed it through because it was a message we all wanted
to see. It was 3 pages in Word, 1907 words, 10,176 characters (including
spaces), and 144 lines.
So the 15K limit would amount to about 1/3 that message, or 635 words, about
48 lines, about one full page.

I am rather new to this post, but find the format cumbersome. I, as some of you know, follow the Wanderlodge Owners Group. The difference in reading that post and the GMCnet post is that the GMC post tends to have the original post and the answers repeated over and over.
After a while one begins to be able to pick through, but for me it is most difficult. Am I doing the post wrong or is this just a function of the way this is formatted. I’d invite you to look at the Wanderlodge set up or the Newell set up…it is infinitely easier for me to follow. Thanks,

GMCnet started as an email list and email is still the preferred access method for most members. It's easy for email users to type a response to a message, with the entire message they are responding to quoted below where they are typing.
It's easy on the forum to respond to a message without quoting anything, with the result that email users can't follow the conversation. Email is not (automatically) organized into threads like the online forum is.
So, carefully trimmed quotes is useful for both types of users.
Any automated enforcement would diminish the usability for one group or another. Having both methods available to us is nice, but it requires just a little attention to keep messages to the point.
(For forum users, the quote is everything between the "quote" and "/quote" tags--you can deleted anything between those tags that isn't relevant.)

Althought I'm an email user, I've always tried to be diligent about trimming
for the sake of forum users. Now that I use GMail exclusively, I try to
continue to trim. But for myself, and other GMail users, that's not at all
necessary because GMail automatically hides quoted text. The material is
still just one click away, but not obtrusive.
Along with purely subject-driven threading, that makes GMail by far the best
mail client I've used.

I'm still not sure I'm doing this correctly. IMHO the posts should flow like a conversation. Yes, it may take some effort to look back and see what someone has commented, but the whole comment is not repeated again and again. Ken, when you say you use primarily email does that mean that only the topics to which you are susbcribed come through? And do they show up on your email or do you still read from this page? I'm confused, but I'm not so dumb as to think I need to read the same comment more than once. Straighten me out.

Come-on people,,,this is not rocket science. When you hit the "reply" button in both the web version or the email version, what comes up is the whole email that you are replying to. Most of what you will see in front of you is unnecessary to your response and just fills up the server with junk. Place your curser on the first line that you don't want to appear in your reply and drag it to the last line. Release the mouse button and hit the delete key. The KISS principle applies here...

Larry- when I reply to your message I see nothing to delete. Are you speaking of quotes only. And the reason for quoting would be so that the emailers could tell what everyone is talking about?

Hi Matt
I'm sorry about reporting your post at 39K. It appears Outlook 2010 adds a
significant amount of data to each message. I saved the text from your
message, the size was only 10, 679 including the email headers and footers.
I am still trying to find what Outlook is adding to triple the size of the
message, I'm sure someone thinks the extra is useful but I have not seen any
useful information.
I was not implying that long posts were not appropriate but that quoting the
full message to add a small comment is a waste of Patrick's Internet
bandwidth.

Hello to all.
I am currently not a GMC owner but very interested in learning more
bout these unique M. Homes.
I recently totaled a sports car that I had been restoring for a number
f years and now thinking that tinkering on something that has a bit
ore purpose and reward (not to mention being big enough to protect me a
it more than the little two seater.
That brought me to GMC motorhomes as I have seen a couple for sale in my
eneral area.
Is there anything similar to a buyers guide?
If not, can someone share tips on what to look for, be concerned about etc?
Help and suggestions greatly appreciated.
Regards
riff

Are you okay with offsite images using IMG tags? I wouldn't think it would take up server space on your end although I imagine it may add time for the page to open for folks with slower connections.
