I guess I shoulda read more about rear mufflers.
I thought the flowmaster 70 was a no brainer.

Well, NOT in a Royale!
The muffler can be made to fit, and it would be fine if it wern't for the 1/2" clearance to the plastic gray tank.

Dang it anyway.
So I ordered the round muffler from Jim K. Hope it's not too loud...

Anyone want a good deal on a flowmaster 70, never used?

put a heat shield next to it no matter which muffler you use.

I hear ya Keith.....I was all set to order the muffler and parts and I measured the clearance......I have just short of 10" from the waste tank to the inside of the frame rail. Still thinking of what direction to go on this.

Have any of those who have the rear muffler set up checked the temp of the muffler? It seems top me that it would be somewhat cooler being that far from the engine.

I have had the Jim K rear muffler exhaust for 2 years now and wouldn't trade it.

Just a thought.

If you move the muffler be smart and put a shield in. The Garman's coach
burned because the muffler had been moved farther back and there was no heat
shield. After 3500 miles of so conditions were right to do harm.

Just wondering if those flexible baking sheets
(for cookies and such) would make a good shield?

They will withstand over 350F temperatures in an
oven and I believe they come in different sizes.

Any medium weight aluminum or galvanized sheet metal will make a good heat shield. Available in sheets at Lowes or Home Depot. Usually about the thickness of home heating duct material.

That's not the type to which I was referring.

I'm talking about the ones made of some sort
of a plastic or polymer type stuff; sort of
translucent. I also think they are available
in several colors

To store them in a cabinet at home or in your
coach, you just roll them up.

I think they are actually rather cool once you
turn the oven off!

Flowmaster already makes a heat shield for that muffler. Just order the one that goes on it rather than trying rig something else up.

Ray I had 12" thought, ok it's close, but it should work..
Put it in and nope, way too close, there is no way that tank would not melt.

I'll post my thoughts on the 6" muffler volume when I get it in and running.

Since I have a bunch of 22 gauge steel I'm going to use that for a heat shield.
It will be 2 layers separated by an airspace. The metal will be bent to protect the floor and the tank. There will be 3 air spaces. 1 between the muffler and the first shield, another between the shield and the third between the shield and the flooring.

That, the bottom of the flooring being aluminum and Jims 6" round muffler and we should be good to go.

Any kind of metal (not foil) will act as a heat shield

Anyone that thinks that a shield is not needed on a tight fit
situation is taking there chances.
We have been supplying the Hush Power on the rear kit for less than a
year with out the shields as Flow Master insists that they have a
built in insulation on these round style muffler.
We know we supply the shields automatically on the other mufflers.
Not sure, but we have been selling these same kit for over 5 years. We
must have over 60 units running.

Ray, the dimensions are:6"dia., 16" body length wit 2" on both ends.
I is louder than the original 53074.
I was told by the factory rep that it would be quieter, instead it is
louder. Several have not complained as you do not hear it in the coach
as the skin is made out of heavy gauge steel.
I just got off the phone with him and he wants me to see if we can
install a 9"dia. , 20"body unit in the coach.
It will not need a shield as the Hush Power has a built in shield.
The feel that this larger one will be quieter.

Jim
Are those 2" on the ends or 3"?

I thought you had these for the 3" system.

The problem with a larger one is going to be how to get the exhaust pipe over 1.5" to connect to the muffler.

My backup plan if to buy a resonator to put up front in the dogleg.

But maybe a second 6" muffler would be better there??

Ray, the dimensions are:6"dia., 16" body length wit 2" on both ends.
I is louder than the original 53074.
I was told by the factory rep that it would be quieter, instead it is
louder. Several have not complained as you do not hear it in the coach
as the skin is made out of heavy gauge steel.
I just got off the phone with him and he wants me to see if we can
install a 9"dia. , 20"body unit in the coach.
It will not need a shield as the Hush Power has a built in shield.
The feel that this larger one will be quieter.
