Hi all,

This weekend I will be installing Thorleys and the SS single muffler from JimK. Assessing what needs to be done I found that the the propane line is right where the muffler needs to go (see below link).

I seen the pictures of the single muffler exhaust install EmeryStora did and I see he repositioned the line using 5/8" soft copper tubing. Question is where can one get soft copper tubing? I checked Lowes and they have nothing of the sort. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Lowes is suppose to have it.

Soft copper usually comes in rolls and is easy to bend. There are different types. I don`t know what is best for propane.
About any plummers truck would probably have short pieces laying around. It is usually not throwed away at 1$ lb.

Jon,

If you want to make it real straight you can hook one end to something solid
and hook the other end to a come-a-long and pull it a bit, it will come out
straight!

Be sure to use the heat shield, there have been times where shops will
not install the shield as they think it is impossible to do.
The diagonal frame was never positioned by a fixture so it can get in
the way to where you might need to cut the mid section of that frame
piece.
This muffler is a mild one and you'll find that the noise inside is very low.

I saw the coil roll of copper Lowes. It is definitely not soft copper. Also they do not have the right kind of fittings. Man I hope this is going to be a PIA to find!

I was all set to convert to the 3" exhaust and single rear muffler, I take all the measurements and find out that with my Royale's two waste tanks, there's no room for the muffler. DANG !!

Right now I have the twin mufflers up front with 2 pipes that just exit the passenger side of the coach in front of the door......too much exhaust smell with this setup, I'll just convert the side exhaust to the rear and leave it at that.

Jon

Jon,

Most Lowe Depots have soft copper and flare fitting, but you often have to search on your own because the children in the department aren't very well acquainted with the stock items by name. If you see copper tubing in a coil, it is soft copper.

If that fails,

Talk to refrigeration people. That is all that is used for real systems. Some supply stores may sell a cut length (they don't like to), and they will have the correct fittings.

You want L, but type K will work.

One of the problems with not have your location posted is that I don't know if you are close enough for me to lend you a good (not hardware store grade) flaring block.

Jon,
The coil stuff is plenty soft enought. Fittings? Look over in the
fitting section for ferrels and ferrel nuts. You will need a flaring
tool for nice tight connections. It's all there. Very easy to find
this stuff.

If it's coiled and you can uncoil it, it's soft copper. The straight 10' pieces are more like hard copper.

What model muffler did you purchase Larry?

The measurement from the wall of my waste tank to the IS of the frame rail is only about 9", yours looks like a much larger space.......knowing Coachmen, they just threw these up there without measuring.....I'll take another look, I sure would like to go to the rear muffler.

Ray,
Yes, I did replace the rear waste tank. It was all busted up. Lots of people have asked me about that rectangular hole next to the tank. It was there when I dropped the old tank. Have no idea what it was, or is for. Some day I will fill it with insulation.

The Muffler I used in this install is the Flowmaster 70. Not pictured in the install is the resonator that I have since added to cut down on a irritating rap coming from this Cad 500 at certain throttle/load conditions. I just measured distance between the new waste tank and the outside frame rail to be 15". So it appears I have a lot more room than you do. Measured 10" (tight) from outside frame rail to inside edge of the muffler. Don't look like the 70 series will fit in your application, but that new round flowmaster is 6" in diameter and might work in your case. I have a 6" round flowmaster with 3" inlet/outlet that I took off. Next time I come to Milwaukee I could bring it along and you could try it. If it works for you I'd make a hell of a deal for you on it. It it doesn't work, just give it back.

I have the Thorley headers and 2 mufflers up front. All Stainless Steel except the tail pipe. It is assembled with the clamps that are the sleeve with 2 bolts. It is very ridged. I have already had to replace one of the gaskets. I think it is because there is no give when the engine rocks. Is there a flexible pipe that I can put in btw the mufflers and the headers? The muffler on the left side is hanging down lower that I think it should. The pipe (btw header and muffler) is bent in such a way that I can not just cut it shorter. I did cut about 1" off just to get it to fit in the first place. Are the left and right down pipes the same? Maybe I have them on the wrong sides.
Has anyone else had this problem??

Gary,

When I first installed the Thorley headers I "discovered" that the adapters from the headers to the mufflers were different lengths. Calls to the GMC supplier netted differing opinions on which side should be the shorter -- so I had to trial and error which worked for my coach.
