Ok dumb question here: what are the symptoms when a distributor module fails?

When mine failed the engine quit and would not start.

Often you will get backfiring or engine stumbling or else the engine will just not run and you will have no spark.

With mine, I drove in in the driveway, running normal, very smooth idle. shut it off and washed it (love bugs), next day when I tried to start it there was no spark.
Jeff Sirum mentioned that normally, they are like a light bulb, on and off. Others have differing symptoms.

IIRC you have and early coach. The modules being discussed are for HEI systems not installed until 1975. (I think it was 1975... I know '73/74 had breaker points.)

It is possible that yours was converted to HEI... but most likely not. My '73 has a Dick Paterson upgraded unit. (Non-HEI)

Bad HEI modules can cause no or improperly timed spark.
