Greetings, all. I have now had the second mechanic tell me that my front wheel bearings are sealed and not in need of grease. Is this possible? Advice please. David

Hey David;

Well, your mechanic is right in the fact that there are seals up
there, but the bearings are not permanently sealed, and do need to be
inspected once in awhile (I'm only talking about the stock setup). I'd
follow Emory's suggestion and find a third mechanic with more
experience on the Toronado frontend.

G'day,
Sounds like you are dealing with a younger mechanic. Seems most new stuff comes with "sealed for life" wheel bearings and don't need repacking, Unfortunately GMC's do.
Their are a couple of different options of fitting grease nipples so you don't need to disassemble the whole hub every time. I'm sure members more wise than I will chime in here.
Their is a lot of weight and stress on those parts, regular inspection and fresh grease is great piece of mind.

G'day,

Do you know if you have the standard GMC knuckles and hubs or do you have
the heavy duty setup built by Bill Hubler:

I don't know if the Hubler setup has sealed bearings or not but I figured
I'd ask.

Your mechanic is not a mechanic. He must be a parts changer
and he does not know the GMC. Get a new Mechanic.

The Wallace setup was a ball bearing in addition to the OEM bearings.

I've seen pictures of it but I can't remember if they had grease zerks or
not.

Yes the wallace hubs have zerk fitting and should be lubed after loosening the axel nut.

Look it up in the Maintenance manual and take him a copy of the pages if you plan on continuing to use that mechanic. I strongly suggest you find someone else who knows what they are doing if you plan to have work done on the front bearings.

If you do not check and lube the the bearings properly you will be sitting at the side of the road some day with a burned up bearing and also a destroyed hub and knuckle. This gets expensive very quickly.

I was trying to find that because I though CRS had gotten me again! It's
been stated in this thread that Wallace added a BALL bearing. Not so. As
shown in that picture he added a TAPERED ROLLER bearing! I've never yet
figured out how one can reliably load an odd number of tapered bearings.
Maybe someone tell me -- I've been wondering since I first heard about it
10 years ago.

Maybe someone tell me -- I've been wondering since I first heard about it
10 years ago.



Ken you load two at a time and the third goes along for the ride. LOL Teeter totter anyone?

Hubler does have the sealed unit that can be replaced by any one
without any special tools.
Whole assembly costs around 230 and simple to do.

I have a sales brochure from Wallace of which I gave a copy to Billy Massey years back.

Larry,
The 3 bearing unit is nothing more than a training wheel for the
standard set up.
Mr. Wallace knew how to do the standard bearing very well, so they
lasted for a long time
I was one of the first to purchase and install it in 1983.
In 20,000 miles I had a loose knuckle and took it apart and realized
it was not all that great.
Wes Caughlan chewed me out for even thinking as an engineer how you
can load 3 bearings at one time.
Well, I'm not nearly as bright as he is.

I agree that one cannot load an odd number of tapered bearings BUT what if
the outer bearing was a close tolerance ball bearing.

Harley-Davidson converted from tapered roller wheel bearings to close
tolerance ball bearings a few years back.
