A while back someone mentioned that Joe Mondello was bringing a new set of headers designed explicitly for the GMC 455 to the recent Rally.

No other mention was made. I was wondering if Mondello actually brought or was showing a new style header for the GMC 455 and whether there were pictures or not?

No photos taken that I'm aware of.

However, he did work with Doug on a "superior" design. Mondello said to be
sure and ask for Doug's Headers.

IIRC, because of some legal stuff Doug has no relationship with Thorley.

Otherwise, contact Joe directly.

Yes He brought a fine looking set set to GMCES and sold them to an attending member. They are coated inside and out. His style is suppose to have larger flanges to better fit the 455s. His claim is they run cooler and don`t leak, cold or hot. I believe they are available from Him.

Sure but you will need to drop the left header. I have pictures somwhere but you wont really see that the flanges are a little thicker and the holes are a little larger. Maybe I can find and post tomorrow. 600 bux for the coated headers. I think Leigh Harrison bought them but I could be wrong.

Byron,
Doug and Betty sold their business a few years ago. Doug is still
involved in headers. Back in the 60's he manufactured headers under
the name of "Doug's Headers". I think the Thorley name went with the
business.

Steve-
Joe did bring a set of Doug's/Mondello headers and he explained why he
and Doug designed and manufactured them exclusively for the GMC motor home.
He showed that a number of header gasket and leaking problems were
causes by a poorly fitting flange. The flange was designed for the 403,
not the same as the 455. Leigh Harrison acknowledged that he had been
plagued by such problems and snatched up the sample pair that Joe brought.
I may have pictures, but not sure what they would show.

Thanks for the update Doc.
Even with that flange, those are quality built headers. The fellow
in San Diego who has done all my exhaust work (20-30 cars and the GMC)
grew up next door to Doug and Betty and spent a lot of time at their
shop. His parents were close and Sunday dinners with the Thorley's
was not uncommon. This pretty much confirms that Doug is back at it
under his original handle.

since they re-designed them why didn't they make them so the governor could be pulled? is there a clearance problem?

No you need to loosen the header to get the governer off.
The unit is very similar to the Thorley, the difference between the
two is minimal as it is almost a copy of the original.
All the Thorley units are coated identical to the DOUG"S Headers.
Don't let Joe tell you it is special as it is standard in their price
book just like the one in Thorley catalogs.
