Dan,
Your tach removes all doubt!! 'Wasn't sure if you had one...
(Re my statement - "Agree with Ken and Jim - although a long
shot, the "noise
and sensation" you experienced may not be what it appears to
be...")
I'm with you on engine revs in a motorhome with a car
drivetrain!! There was a reason the designers rated the
engine at 3600 RPM("403") - and 3400("455").

Thanks Fred. I wish that was it. At 60 mph my tach is
running around 26-2700 rpm. When the thing kicked, @ 60 mph,
I looked and the tach was at 3500. I never run the engine
over 3 grand, and normally about 26-2700. I do love
hotrodding but not in a 12,000 pound beast with a car engine
and tranny.

When I had my problem with my new tranny, Manny told me he was having trouble with the kickdown solenoids. His only source was from China. He suggested that I disable the solenoid by plugging the port underneath it. This requires removing the pan, removing the solenoid, tapping the port to accept a screw (the plug) and replacing the solenoid. This disables the solenoid and prevents any leakage by it that can cause shifting problems. My problem was the governor but when I got home, I disabled it anyway as I did not want future problems. Manny recommends using the shifter manually for kickdown as opposed to allowing the switch and solenoid to do it. I do not know enough about it to argue one way or the other so I went with his suggestion.
Gary stated that he got one for twenty bucks so maybe they are available locally, but again, Manny said he was getting them from China. I would be curious to know what his position is on this now that it is 3 years later. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks,

Dan;
When you get the governor out, carefully observe where the spool valve is in reference to the valve body. When the spool is in the 'down' position, the lower port must have about .020" opening. Sometimes debris or varnish will hamper the action of the spool valve.
Drive the pin out of the nylon drive gear and carefully remove the spool valve. Notice how the spool valve is located in the valve body, it must be installed correctly.
Some of the after-market nylon gears are not correct. Compare it with a known good GM gear. The gear positions the spool valve in the lowered position, so accurately measure the gear with a good one.
With the spool valve out, dip the whole governor in laquer thinner and wash it good, blow it clean with low pressure air, and when assembling, put a small amount of ATF up in the weights area and dip the spool valve in ATF and assemble. Check to see everything is free.
Good luck and tell 'mr megasquirt' HI

Dan,
I just removed the solenoid and put battery voltage to it. It
moved a couple of times and then quit. The seal was
distorted, which caused it to not seal. It is a normally closed
solenoid. Took it to my transmission-shop friend.
He said, "No problem, that's just a T-400 kickdown with a longer
wire." (Remember, mine was the switch-pitch
solenoid.) Reached in a drawer, pulled out the part and said
"You can make the wire longer, can't you?". So, any
tranny shop should have the part. Easy fix, when you can get to
it.

My tranny did not work right at any temperature until I changed the governor. So it was a somewhat different symptom. However, as stated earlier, the governor change is an easy trial.
