I have a friend that is in the paint/chrome business and has just started offering chrome on plastic or any other surface done via a spray type operation.
He is looking to do some "learning" on some small parts and I thought of the headlight surrounds. He was wondering what the interest was and what a fair price would be? I tossed out between $75 and $125 for a pair if the surround was provided to him to do the work on.
Would there be 5 or 6 guys interested in trying this out? He can do straight chrome, or a colored chrome like candy colors.
He also thought that maybe the front grill would look sharp chromed in a color or a black chrome with trim.
Is this something anyone would like to have?

Yes he will prep them and get them as smooth as possible, Do a fill and block them as best as possible. May not be perfect, but unless we start with very good fiberglass new ones it will be tough.
He said he would try some and let the owner decide if they are worth the price. If not he would take what they offered or nothing at all. I told him we were all honorable honest men. But I tend to fib also.

I thought the Manny grill was made of Aluminum?
You could have that triple chrome plated at a good chrome plating shop in
Washington could you not?
Check with your local Harley dealer they'll probably know the name of a good
shop.

Well we just started to talk about it, so the time frame is open at this time. It may be something that will take him 4 or 5 weeks to work into, so anyone in a "rush, gotta have it yesterday" then it is not for you at this point. I am going to have him do one of my grills in black chrome to see how it works.
He is talking about getting 50% down so he can justify the materials, and I told him that it would be probably fine if it was in the 35-40 range, He is taking a chance, and I know so are any early adopters.
He has about 8 grand invested in the machine and product so far, so you can see he is not trying to make a killing. He wants to take small steps first and make sure people like it and are willing to pay what they are worth.

If it is a Manny grill and Al, then a regular chrome process is better, Or get it polished and sealed.
He is talking plastic and non metal items for what he does.

Agreed! High quality (show) chrome plating is triple chrome: copper - nickel
- chrome.
For chrome plating on aluminum to last the plater has to use a thick layer
of copper. This was especially true for the parts I used when I was building
hot rod Harleys in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is located on the South China sea
and gets lots of rain and there's a lot of salt in the air! Sound familiar
to you up in Washington?
I "trained" a plater in Escondido, CA for my aluminum parts. I explained to
him that I didn't care if he charged me extra for a "perfect" job because
shipping them back and forth cost more than what he was charging me for the
plating. He got it and in the five years I used him he never sent me a bad
piece!
There are two types of chrome plating; hexavalent and trivalent. The
trivalent process produces less pollution than the hexavalent process and a
lot of platers have switched to that process. The problem is the "color" of
the chrome is not the same. Hexavalent chrome has a blue tint and Trivalent
has a gold tint. This results in some people preferring one over the other.
Also if you mix parts on a vehicle that are done using the different
processes you can readily see the difference especially if there are two
parts chromed using the different process next to each other. The difference
stands out like dog's balls (another Aussie lesion!)
I would suggest you have a chat with Manny before you mess with your grill.
As far as going to Mexico to have them chromed I'd be real careful about
that. I'd do some study on the process on the web and visit a local chrome
plating shop with your parts and ask them how they would chrome them "for a
quote". That way when you got to Mexico you could ask how they would do the
parts and see if it compared the shops you had visited.

As far as I know, there are no good chrome shops in America anymore
due to the EPA. I guess what I mean is that there are no inexpensive
ones. I was thinking about going to Mexico and having it done (along
with my wife's dune buggy heart rims). The grill is probably aluminum,
but the fellow was talking about spraying it. I'm interested in that
process on a number of things.

At that price, I would be interested.
I do not think candy colored chrome would go with anything I have envisioned for my coaches... but could see it on some other coaches. I must be to conservative. But maybe a gold color... with gold colored emblems? Have to think about this. (Emblems are small learning parts.)
My "better" set of headlight surrounds would still need repairs on some of the mounting holes. I also would think it would be a good idea to reinforce the "good" holes before going thought the time and expense to chrome them. --- Anyone know the best method that is also compatible with the chroming process?

discussion of chrome shops be taken to a separate thread. This s spray
chrome application and I want to try and gauge the interest.
And there are still many good chrome shops in the US. but the price is
high, as labor and materials are expensive to do it right. Can we leave
it at that?

where the hound looses track of the fox because the fox can frequently morph
into crow prior to it's being eaten.
On the topic, I'm willing to give it a shot. I would want a grill done as
well. Since this is a spray on process (of which I've read some) is it
possible to mask and area for satin black of must the whole piece be chrome
sprayed (to appear like plating)?
